needle phobia, anyone?

I have always been apprehensive during blood draws/shots, but after fainting while a nurse was trying to give me an IV it has gotten much worse. This morning the Dr wanted to give me a Tetanus shot and I turned pale and almost got sick. Needless to say we put that one off.

If you have conquered this fear, how did you do it? At this point, I'm thinking valium every time I go in.

Re: needle phobia, anyone?

  • I used to pass out during blood draws.  I once put off a physical for over 6 months because that is how long it took me to get the courage to have my blood drawn.  So I totally feel ya.

I conquered the fear by going through IVF.  Wink

  • I just tense up.  I hate needles.
  • Have someone there that makes you laugh and make sure you eat/drink plenty before you go. Sometimes that isn't even enough. :( Sorry mama.
  • Oh, what helps me still is reminding myself that it really doesn't hurt that bad at all.  And sometimes I dig my fingernails into the skin of my arm or leg to "spread" the pain.  Yes

  • I can handle needles, but I HAVE to look away and do what Kim said...I dig my fingernails into my arm or my leg and focus on that instead of the needle.

  • ditto the eating/drinking before and make sure your arm is warm. I always have to look away.

I wonder if they could give you something topical to numb the area?

  • When I do bloodwork they always want me to fast for 12 hours.

It's not the pain, it's all mental for me. I'm a huge chicken.

  • drink lots and lots of water before and make sure your arm is warm.  I've had a few instances where they've had difficulties finding my veins.  fun times. :/

    ::shudder::

  • A few years ago I started to black out during blood draws or shots, so I always request to have the work done while laying down. This usually gives me the option of looking away and it seems to take a lot of the edge off of fainting again.

  • I don't like needle sticks, but I've always been pretty mellow with them (says the girl that had 5 travel vaccinations in the same appointment). I just look away, take deep breaths and tell myself that it will be over quickly.

If it's a blood draw or they're putting in an IV, I completely echo the sentiments to be well hydrated. It'll keep your veins nice and open.

  • I don't hate shots as much as I hate blood draws/IVs.  I've passed out once and had a total sweaty meltdown a few times.  I absolutely cannot watch the needle going in or staying in my arm.  When I had my back surgery I made the nurses totally cover up the IV needle in my arm with tape.  Then I put a pillow over it just in case.
  • Let's just say that when the Dr asked when my last tetanus shot was, I fell head first from the exam table to the ground.  I know where you are coming from.  What helped me was sitting down and imagining myself in that situation and writing down all my thoughts.  I realized that I did not like the loss of control in the situation.  I freak out with needles and blood unless I feel a need to do something about the situation to help myself or someone else.  It also helps me to let the nurse know that I don't like shots and see if they can let me lay down for it.  I don't black out if I am laying down.  I have been trying to get more brave and take brief looks lately, but still working up to that one. The nurses usually let me tell them when I am ready which allows me to relax a bit and not feel like they are just going to attack me with it.  I can at least drive myself to and from the appointment now, which is GREAT!

  • I never really "conquered" this fear because I don't have this fear. Needles don't hurt very much, and you need to get shots and have blood drawn.  That's enough for me.

Try your hardest to think practically and rationally.  I suppose this may not be possible with a phobia...because it's a phobia.

  • I got my flu shot and my tetanus shot back to back a couple of months ago.  The tetanus shot was only a little worse than the flu shot.  I will warn you that your arm will be sore for a couple of days so get it in the one that you don't use as often and don't do it right before you will have to do anything physical with your arm.  Just think about all the needles you will need if something happens and you don't have your tetanus shot.

I have never been that scared of needles-I don't like it but I deal.  After being in the hospital for three weeks years ago I guess I just got over it.
