what did you do for your 10 yr class reunion?

small town, small class (just under 50)...trying to plan it.  debate is going on about getting kids involved...so many ppl don't have kids yet...so many are just getting married.  did you involve the kids @ 10 year?  if not...when did you start?

we want it low key and inexpensive.  thanks!

Re: what did you do for your 10 yr class reunion?

  • I didn't go to mine but it was a cocktail party at a local restaurant. No kids.
  • I didn't attend mine but it was adults only at a hotel ballroom/banquet room.

If you decide to do it in the summer, maybe an informal picnic at a park so it would be easy for kids to attend/play and still be inexpensive?
  • Is there a park where you can rent a shelter and do a potluck picnic type thing?  For a 10 year reunion I'm guessing that most of the kids are little?  If so, I would try to get a shelter near a playground.  Or if you went to a high school for pregnant girls or something and you all have teenagers to entertain, maybe organize it around a softball game.

  • No kids. Open bar + fried appetizers = the only reunion I would even consider attending.
  • It was more cocktail party - heavy hors d'oeuvres with a live dance band in a warehouse building that does events.  No children - the few people that have them got babysitters.  It's just one night out.
  • I just had mine last weekend.  We held it at a restaurant. We ended up having food and cash bar. It was a lot of fun. We also had a DJ, but dancing didn't start until much later in the night.

There were no kids, although only a few people from my class had kids.  Only a few people brought dates (my friends and I left the guys at home).

I would call around your area to find restaurants that will host a large crowd. Find out if a deposit is required, what kind of menu you can work, etc.

For us decorations weren't necessary, so I think that would be fine to skip and also save you money.

  • Your best bet:

Pick a local inexpensive restaurant and have a "blue jeans reunion." Let everybody order what they want; run a tab and let them pay for what they ate and drank.

  • We had it at the local country club (mind you, this was a town of 6k people, so the country club was almost as nice as the cafeteria in my office building, ha!)  Anyway, early in the day they had swimming for families then adults only reception with aps and drinks--apps were provided, we had to pay for our own drinks.
  • Our 10 year was grads & their dates only.

Our 20 year was a two day event. Friday was family picnic, so obviously bring the kids, and the Saturday was grads & their dates only. FWIW- Most people skipped the family day.

  • I graduated with 93.  We had a cocktail party in the school lobby for just the alumnae.  Then the next morning we had a brunch upstairs in the new rooftop cafeteria for families.  We were notorious for having no class spirit though so most people only went to the cocktail party.  Since the school let us have everything there it was inexpensive.

  • We're planning ours now--cocktail party on Saturday evening at a hotel/hall then picnic in a park pavilion on Sunday.  People pick and choose where to go.

We had a picnic for our 5-year because the girl who organized it had kids and was being cheap about it.  We ended up paying $10/person for some fried chicken and sitting around staring at each other while maybe 4 kids ran around.  If you want to have just a one-day event, go for the cocktail party.

    This.

  • My high school was very small- 200.  They do alumni weekends for the whole school.  For our 5, 10, and 15 yr we rented a private room in a restaurant.  $10 got you heavy apps and you ran a tab for drinks.
  • i had a graduating class even smaller than yours. we just met last week over Thanksgiving weekend since a lot of out of towners were in. one girl volunteered to host at her house and we all just BYOB and an appetizer to share. no one brought kids.
  • Cocktail reception on Friday. Dinner/Party at a Hotel on Saturday.
  • We did a mixer on Friday night, formal dinner on Sat. and a picnic on Sunday.  We only charged for Saturday night and the bar was no-host on Friday.  It allowed a) people who couldn't afford a "formal" dinner b) people who could c) families.  Good turnout.  How are you contacting people?  I guess with 50 it's not bad.  We used myspace, fb, and the hs for contact info.  GL!
  • We went to a park without reserving it on Sunday but told the bar owner on Friday about the mixer so they could have extra staff.  People don't REALLY want to bring their kids to show off at a 10 year. We had maybe 10 people at the picnic.  Nobody different than at the dinner/mixer.
  • Ours was a couple months ago (hubby and I graduated together).  It was at a local restaurant, very low key and and the tickets were about $50 a per to cover drinks and dinner.  I think kids would kind of take away from the reason of the reunion so I would stay away from that. Good luck!
