Classic Holiday Recipe

DH's grandpa has been battling cancer for the past year and we are going to visit this weekend.  It always cheers him up when I make cookies so I thought I would make some peanut blossoms.  When I started looking for my recipe I came across this gem in the family cook book:

1 pkg peanut butter cookie dough

1 pkg Hershey kisses

Bake cookies as directed on package.  Place Hershey Kiss on cookie after baking.

Now I realize that this is a perfectly acceptable way to make cookies but submitting it as a formal recipe?

Re: Classic Holiday Recipe

  • My MIL works at an elementary school in rural NC. She gave me a "cookbook" that was put together by all of the employees. And yes, cookbook does belong in quotation marks in this instance. It's like reading the nightmarish ramblings of Sandra Lee.

    For example:

"Easy Hamburger Meal" - brown 1 lb of hamburger and mix in 1 can of condensed mushroom soup. Simmer for 30 min. (I really pray this lady does something else with this mixture but there are no other directions.)

"Hero Sandwiches" - 1 loaf italian bread, 1lb deli meat, 1/2 head lettuce, cut , 1 tomato sliced, Italian dressing, cheese of choice. Then it gives directions on how to make a sandwich. (Thanks, I wasn't sure how to make a sandwich.)

I could go all day with this thing. It's a nice little printed and bound cook book but come on, 10+ recipes for chicken casserole (including one that has Velveeta, mayo, condensed soup AND potato chips in it), the broccoli bread and the strange entry for home made baby wipes using sheets of paper towels??

Ok had to edit because I left out another good one. "Noodle surprise" - 1lb ground beef, 4 packages of Ramen noodles. Boil noodles, brown hamburger, combine and add seasoning. (The only surprising thing is why someone would deem this cookbook worthy.)

  • I don't cook very well but even I am more advanced than those recipes.

My mom makes a recipe like this but she also adds asian style vegtables in to make it like a stir fry.  It's really good but it's definately something she'd never enter into a "cookbook"

I'm pretty sure I'll never be hungry again after reading (and subsequently trying to imagine) that.

    Ick!

This reminds me of a recipe a friend was telling me about yesterday.  Apparently it is a family favorite called "Yummy Ham." Ham, Cheez Whiz, and green beans over cornbread.  What part of this is yummy?  The pizza you order when you find out this is on tonight's menu?

  • I read this very quickly this morning and thought, "does she really not think we've all heard of peanut butter cookies with kisses on top?!". Sorta glad i reread the thread, but slightly disgusted by some of KB's  "contributions".
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

This just literally made me gag... I hate ham anyway.  How do people eat crap like that.  I got a recipe in one of those email recipe exchanges the other day for "tator tot casserole" - 1 bag frozen tator tots, 4 hot dogs, diced, 1 can cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 block velveeta cheese, cubed.  Layer and bake and top with shredded cheddar.  How is that cooking?  I dont really mind the addition of the condensed soup at certain times, or even the use of velveeta when necessary but really how can you put all that together and add hot dogs and think "hmmm... this sounds fantastic"  no wonder there is an obesity problem in this country.

  • I have nothing against condensed soup or even a short cut recipe now and then. My issue is the serious overuse of pre-processed foods in these recipes and then submitting said recipes to a cookbook that lists your name beside it. Is it ironic that the title of this book was "Pride in Cooking" by _____ Elementary School Staff?
