Your favorite white elephant gift

Whats your favorite that you have recieved before?
Mine would be chocolates from a local chocolatier or gift cards.

What was the worst one?

Re: Your favorite white elephant gift

  • I got a tiki hut shaped cookie jar, that when opened, played the theme from Gilligan's Island. I loved it, and it was hideous.

SO SINGS MY SOUL *WHAM!* MY SAVIOR GOD TO THEE *WHAM!* HOW GREAT THOU ART *WHAM!* HOW GREAT THOU ART *WHAM!*
  • Someone mentioned sticking cash (however much is the limit) into and empty dvd case and wrapping it.

  • I hate to say it but I never received a "good" white elephant gift.  The worst was this candle burner thing.  It was from the dollar tree.  It made me mad because I spent like $25--the limit, and this person spent $1 or maybe $2.  I am not saying they should have spent TONS, but I guess there is no other way to put it...just kind of bummed me out a bit.

  • I gave someone some rolls of dough.  The first was a roll of cookie dough and the second was some money I rolled up.  She laughed and everyone loved it.

I got some crazy wooden utensil that I seriously didn't understand what it was used for.  It hit the trash fast!

It sounds like the rules needed to be clarified. Whenever I have participated in a white elephant it is usually random things from around your house. Often you do not spend anything. It you do buy something it is cheap. It is more for humor/entertainment than to end up with something worth keeping. If you are lucky you might get something worth holding on to.

If you have a $25 limit is sounds like you are expected to buy something that someone would actually want.  I would not consider this a white elephant exchange.

  • The holiday alcohol gift sets are always a big hit at the Christmas parties we've been two with a younger crowd.

We have to go to DHs work Christmas party and the limit is $15. I think I'm going to either get movie tickets or a Starbucks gift card.

  • We just went to DH's work party with an exchange. We brought legit bottles of Jim Beam and wine that we won't end up drinking, so it wasn't a loss to us. We ended up walking out with a movie poster of Clint Eastwood Yes, and a beat-up, pound puppy remote control holder No.

Last year we gave out a "salesman of the year" trophy that was a friend's Dad's, and a couple of awful VHS movies. We ended up with a handle of Jack Daniels and a sham wow set.  All totally random.

This year people walked out with everything from old halloween costumes, to moving labels, to a snuggie, to a flashdance record and Richard Nixon paperdolls.

The worst thing I've ever seen at an exchange was a dried, cow-ear dog-chew toy (the limit was $1).

  • The funniest ones are usually lingerie for very large women. Other popular things are money, best buy gcs, and starbucks gcs. The best thing I've gotten is wine or some type of alcohol. My mom attends an exchange and every year the same fruitcake is brought. One year my mom won it and put it in the freezer for the next year but my dad ate it. It was probably 10 years old. gross!
  • Best was a bottle of "Fat B*stard" Red wine (not sure if it was Pinot Noir or Merlot).  It was a joke about a sr. exec at the company.

I have never gotten a bad gift - most people give gift cards or liquor.
