We are going to Disney in February and DH is planning the entire trip. He wants to stay at the All-star Sports Resort. It is one of the cheaper resorts, but we don't plan on being in the hotel too much. Also, can anyone pass along any advice for us about Disney in general?
Re: Disney - All-star Resort
I LOVE Disney!!!
Advice... hmm.. I probably have alot I can share with you...
How will you get to the parks- rental car or does the Disney bus stop at your resort? We did both when we went to Disney in June. We are DVC members.. so parking for us at all resorts was free. But if you are a non DVC member you will have to pay a parking fee of about $10 or so for each park. There are many pros to taking your own car. You can come and go as you please, no waiting for a bus. No packing into a hot bus with 52 million other people and strollers. Plus you have the baby as well. The cons to taking your own car would be having to pay a parking fee. You never know where you are going to be parking at the parks.. you could be very far away from the entrance. There are trams that will take you to the entrance and they run frequently and are pretty fast. But you have to wait for them, and board the tram with the stroller, bags etc. If you take the Disney bus.. theres no parking fee, and they bring you right to the entrance. But like I said before.. the buses can get packed and hot!! We found taking our own rental car was better for us. If we were not DVC members.. we probably would of taken the bus.
I highly recommend going to Seaworld at night and watching the Shamu Rocks show. Its VERY good!!
There are baby car centers at each park that provides a quiet place for you to care for you baby. They also have alittle baby store inside in the event you forget something.
If your room has a kitchenette... use it! We saved alot of money by cooking our own meals and not eating out every day! We ate breakfast and dinner in our room. For lunch we would bring snacks and buy things here or there. It worked out great! You will definately want to bring a cooler of some sort.
Disney photo pass is great, but expensive. There are photographers are each park and will take your picture for free. They give you a plastic card that you keep and anytime you want your picture taken by these photographers you give them the card, they scan it and all your pictures immediately go into an online album that you can view. You do not have to buy the pictures. If you want to buy them, you don't have to do it while you are in Disney. You can order them online and from your own home. You have so many days before they expire, which usually gives you enough time to come home and decide what you want. They are expensive though. If you have pictures taken of the characters, take some yourself too.. that way you don't HAVE to buy the pictures that the Disney photographers took.
I would recommend buying your hopper passes in advance. They are expensive depending on how many days you want. That way it gives you time to save money for them.
I hope that helps!! Any more questions ask away, I'd be happy to help!
I stayed at the All Star Music Resort (granted it was years ago) and we loved it. We chose it for the price (i was on a vacation with my mom) and we thought the same thing - we won't be at the hotel much more than to sleep/ shower. Buses were running continuously. We had no issue getting anywhere whenever we needed to. I found these resorts to be adorable. They are fun for kids- really done up well.
Have fun!
Follow my SK blog as I reread the entire SK library (again!):

We stayed at the Caribbean Beach Resort and loved it! Since we stayed at Disney, we didn't need to rent a car, we took the shuttle everywhere.
While we were there, you could get a meal plan and you didn't have to pay for the meals tax or gratuity with it. It saved us a TON of money! I know they still have a meal plan, but you have to pay tax and gratuity now. It is still probably a good deal though. It was $40 or $50 a person per day and just for one of our meals it was over $100. So it was definitely worth it.
I love Disney! You are going to have so much fun. I never stayed at the All Star resort but all the Disney resorts should be good! I would definately go to Sea World, Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, and Epcot. I would go when the parks open (as they are less crowded typically), make reservations at the restaurants you would like to eat at, they have character meals which are so much fun for kids (like eating with Cinderella, etc). The buffet at Grand Floridian is so good..pricey but good.
There is even a forum sort of board for Disney travelers...

Have fun!
Stay at pop century instead...
same price, but the all star resorts share busses...where pop century has it's own busses to and from.
I'm a fountain of Disney info if you have any other questions. We stayed at pop last Sept....
The DDP no longer includes the tip for 08, and the rooms at all stars that have kitchenettes are the family suites and they cost more per night than a moderate resort and are generally meant for larger families...
look on mousesavers.com for discounts...early Feb is still value season and the rates are usually lower.
