Questions About Nashville
Hi everyone,
DH and I currently live in Virginia and are thinking about maybe relocating to Nashville at some point and I have a few questions if anyone knows the area.
First of all, what are the job opportunities like down there? I work at a law firm up here currently, but don't need to necessarily do that down there. Any ideas for assistant-type jobs?
Also, what areas are best to live in? We are both 23 and like a city-type atmosphere (or on the outskirts of the city), but also don't want to live where there is a bunch of crime.
Thanks in advance!
Re: Questions About Nashville
I can't speak on the job market for those type of jobs because I don't know anyone in that field.
Belle Meade is a nice part of the outskits of Nashville (within Davidson Co.). Brentwood and Franklin are nicer cities close to Nashville in Williamson County- south of Nashville. Mt. Juliet is a nicer city closer to Nashville in Wilson County- east of Nashville. Rutherford County- southeast of Nashville- is fast-growing; to me, LaVergne, which is closer to Nashville, isn't as nice as Smyrna, which is further out. Murfreesboro is even a bit further out, and the nicest of the county, in my opinion. I also think Hendersonville, Sumner County- northeast of Nashville- is pretty nice.
Belle Meade or anywhere in Davidson Co. would have the most city-like atmosphere but would be pricey. Williamson County would probably be the next most pricey. Mount Juliet and Murfreesboro are both growing quickly.
I would stay away from Antioch, Madison/Inglewood, and most of downtown. There are some upscale condos in downtown if that's your thing.
You'd call Belle Meade city-like? Huh, I was thinking more like the Gulch or Midtown. I suppose it depends on your definition. It does have a Nashville address. Anyway, Belle Meade is extremely Old Money - huge, grand homes on big green lots and 0 crime. At 23, I wouldn't want to live there (or have the money!) Actually, don't have the money at 29 either
I own a condo next to Vanderbilt University (technically Midtown) and LOVED living there. We could walk to several great restaurants and the football games and everything else was easily accessible by car. Plus no matter where I worked (short of downtown), it was a reverse commute.
The Gulch is a great area with tons of nightlife and fabulous restaurants right downstairs from the condo buildings. The condo market is pretty depressed right now, so you can get a unit in a very, very nice building for some pretty sweet deals right now.
I also lived in East Nashville for awhile and loved it. It's a transitional area, but loads safer than it was several years ago. It's cute and quirky and just down the street from downtown (where all of the big law firms are located). As long as you stay away from the edges, I felt completely safe. I even accidentally caught myself forgetting to lock the doors a few nights. Wouldn't suggest that, though
As far as jobs go, Nashville has a ton of big law firms if you want to stay in that field. Like everywhere else, the job market is pretty crappy but it is better than most places. Good luck!

OMG! So happy to see someone on the board NOT slamming every area inside of Davidson Co! I love all the neighborhoods of Nashville you mentioned. I currently live right off West End Ave, bordering Vanderbilt's campus. Love it. It's actually very very safe. I work in television, and have a crazy shift. Two nights of the week I get off work at about 4am. I've never seen a crazy or homeless person on my street. Never been scared.
Anyways, I also really love the 12thSouth/Belmont area. I was just there for coffee today. It has a couple coffee shops, boutiques, restaurant/bars, and a casual bar/pub. It's very family friendly and yuppie/hipster at the same time.
Also, there is Hillsboro Village, with some condos and apartments in that area.
Also, I have friends who live in the gorgeous Werthan Lofts in Germantown. Germantown is a cute little area. Not as developed as 12thS or E Nash, but it's developing.
Ultimately, when we are ready to buy, we really want to live in East Nashville. We just love the vibe, and think it really fits our style the most. Love the creativity and diversity in all the residents.
WOW! Thanks for all the wonderful responses! This is fabulous and gives us tons of great ideas. Ultimately we'd like to take a trip and now we know what places would be good to look at.
Do most people buy a home down there? DH and I live in a apartment and would probably rather rent than buy to start with, but when I search apartment websites, there don't seem to be a whole lot of opportunities like up here in VA.
I pretty much agree 100% with what MrsNash37212 and UptownGirl said. We live by Vanderbilt (Hillsboro/West End) and love the area.
We bought a home right away when we moved here, but I think that renting is smart. You can get a feel for the area and see where you'd really like to live. We lucked out and really wound up loving the neighborhood.
Because of the college(s), you'll find a lot of rentals by Vanderbilt and in the Belmont/12S area. You'll find a variety of properties - some are single family homes (for purchase) and others are duplexes, condos or just homes for rent.
