Mom Question (no ans on 0-6)

I tried asking on the 0-6 board, but no one has answered yet- and Anna is asleep, so I want to figure this out ideally while she's still sleeping...

I'm going to a wedding tomorrow at 1pm and leaving DD for the first time. I have BM stored in the storage bags and frozen. How do I defrost them? Once I begin the defrosting process, how many hours or days do I have to use the milk (like if I defrost more than she needs while I'm away)? TIA!

Re: Mom Question (no ans on 0-6)

  • I believe you only have 24 hours after you remove them from the freezer.  Check kellymom.com.  I normally defrost mine in lukewarm running water.

  • Ditto what Sarah said. ?Frozen breast milk should be used within 24 hours of taking it out of the freezer. ?I also thaw mine in a cup with lukewarm water. ?

    Have fun!!?

  • You can keep them out until they defrost.  From the moment the defrosting process begins, you have 24 hours to use the milk.  Anything not used should not be re-frozen, but discarded.  Anything past a 24 hour period is also considered trash-worthy.  Have fun at the wedding!!  And I heard we may see you at Mom's Group soon!!  You will love it.  Smile
  • I thought you have 24 hours from when it is defrosted (like you don't have to count the hours that it is defrosting)

If you pump some fresh milk before you go or tonight, just keep that in the fridge to use after a certain number of frozed/defrosted bags are used up.  You can keep fresh stuff around longer.

Have a great time at the wedding!!!

  • I would say have whoever is watching her have them use the fresh milk  first.  Then if they need to use some that is frozen, they can just take it from the freezer and put it in a bowl of warm water to defrost is quickly.  Once fully defrosted it is only good for 24 hrs like others said.  So if you defrost it ahead of time and don't use it, then it goes to waste....just leave it in the freezer to be safe.  Have a great time at the wedding....it's hard leaving the baby for the first time, but you will do great and I am sure she will be in great hands.
