Just found out I'm hosting a baby shower in 2 weeks!

So my sister-in-law just realized she needs to have her shower before Christmas because after Christmas all the snowbirds will be in Florida!

I always have tons of ideas but can't think of any or nothing sounds good from what I've saved. I wanted to do a bumblebee theme but the other hostess had already bought  some simple invites since they had to get out so quickly. Any simple ideas you have to decorate in gender neutral tones would be great.

We think we will do chicken salad but I'm looking for some different ways to serve it. We've done it on crescents and in baked wonton cups. If you have any other great food ideas that would be helpful too!

Re: Just found out I'm hosting a baby shower in 2 weeks!

  • Brunch food is always a hit at showers.  Quiches (vegetarian and non vegetarian) with a nice fruit salad and a savory salad as well as maybe a French toast casserole (Paula Deen's recipe is incredible, although use half the butter she calls for).  You could also do fun, brightly colored punches that could be spiked with champagne or other booze for the non mom-to-be.
  • I just did this baby shower a few weeks ago and it was gender neutral.  On my invitations, I did baby owls but I only carried the color theme because I didn't have the funds to go all out.  I have the menu and prep schedule listed on the blog entry.  It was for about 10 people, to give you an idea of the scale.
  • The owls would be great. The nursery has owls and bees throughout it!

I totally recommend her butternut squash gallette (sp?)  It is out of this world.

    Big Smile

    Merci!

  • I just went to a dessert shower at 2 on a Sunday.  There was cut up fruit, a Boston cream pie bombe, 3 different flavors of fudge, cupcakes (which no one touched because you'd have to mess up your teeth and lipstick), pumpkin cheesecake, a fresh fruit tart and a sherbert punch.  The favors were chocolate "rattles".  Everything was from a bakery, so the hosts had to do very little.

I dearly love chicken salad, but for me it's a summer food and out of season right now.

  • I know I love chicken salad too and it's all we ever have around here for showers but the mom to be loves it ! That's why I'm trying to find something new to do with it.

When I was in school there was a restaurant that served chicken salad with dried cherries. It was one of my favorites there. This is how they served it:

Chicken salad with sundried cherries, almonds, lettuce and mayo on a croissant.

  • Or you could make finger sandwiches with it, and then use something like this to carry out the owl theme:

(Not sure if you think that idea is lame, but I thought I'd throw it out there).

That punch looks amazing!  I love fun, refreshing punches like that.  Did you spike it or keep it as is?

  • The punch was soooo good, but I left it non-alcoholic since it was for the baby shower.  I want to make it again and either do gin, vodka or champagne with it.

I don't have a recipe but how about adding nuts and dried cranberries to the chicken salad to bring it in season?  And seve on either the wonton cups or some kind of cracker?

That ginger punch sounds yummy and perfect for your color!

  • Here is the link to the baby shower I just threw for my sister in-law.  We did a gender neutral jungle theme.  Some of the ideas look like they may work for your theme.

    Good luck!
