Question re: Pre-Owned Cars

This a random question, but I'm hoping someone will know the answer.  When you buy a pre-owned car from a dealership, does the car already have a license plate on it?  And if it does, is it already registered with the DMV?

Re: Question re: Pre-Owned Cars

  • I purchased a pre-owned Civic from a Honda dealership and it had a license plate and was already registered (however I did have to pay the normal registration fee).  Also you do not need to get a smog for it.  HTH.
  • Thanks, SexiLexi!  I do have one other question for you -- since the car was already registered with the DMV, would the tags expire one year from your purchase date?  Or expire one year from the registration of the previous owner?
  • Sorry it took me so long to respond.  I was away for the weekend. Let's see, I purchased the car in November 2006 and the tags expired in Feb. 2007.  So not a whole year.  They can't sell you a car with expired tags but the tags could expire the next month.  It's just whatever month is on the sticker already on the car.  If that makes sense.
  • It totally make sense!  Thanks again!
