How do you keep appetizers warm?

We are hosting a holiday cocktail party in which I plan to serve a few different hot appetizers. Pigs-in-a-blanket, spinakopita, crab cakes, cheese puffs, stuff like that. Basically a bunch of premade stuff from Trader Joe's. The problem I'm having is how to keep them warm as people are mingling around. I don't really feel like being in the kitchen all night warming stuff up but don't want people to be stuck with cold food either.

The only thing I can think of is a bunch of crock pots, but I feel like that presentation will not look very nice and also I'm not sure if it would work anyway. Thoughts?

Re: How do you keep appetizers warm?

  • You have a few options.  I know that Pyrex makes some warmers and there are always chafing dishes.  However, I usually just warm things up before guests arrive and try to pick items that can be served either warm or at room temperature.
  • Target carries a stainless steel crock pot type of thing that has three separate dishes for food.  It is very nice and keeps things warm while not looking so great.
  • Party City has aluminum foil disposable chaffing dishes.

  • For what you've listed, crock pots won't help.  You need platters, not a crock.

There are lots of low tech solutions.  Put a heating pad under a patter (of course disguise it). Or use platters that are oven safe and warm them at a low temp before using, etc. They make heat retentive serveware that's pretty attractive.  You can also keep some food items in a low oven to hold before serving.

Also, I'd consider switching away from so many hot apps.  Even if you can keep them warm, you'll need to be in the kitchen more than you want.
