Can anyone help with Chesapeake info???

DH is in the Coast Guard and Chesapeake is one of our choices to move to.  I have lived in Lynchburg, VA for 6 months, but have never been to Chesapeake or the surrounding areas.  Can anyone give me info on the area??  Is it city living or more suburban?  Is there a lot to do?  We have run out of things to do in Key West and we want some place that has different things to do every weekend, so we don't get bored.  How is the housing?  Best neighborhoods?  We want a place that is more city than country, but we may not have a choice.  Thanks girls, any info would be great!

Re: Can anyone help with Chesapeake info???

  • Chesapeake is diverse in its types of living.  The Greenbrier area is more like the city--surrounded by shops, restaurants, the mall, the new Town Center, close to interstate.  It has a variety of housing available--townhouses, condos, single family homes, and apartments.  Western Branch area is similar to Greenbrier, but I prefer Greenbrier.  Everywhere else in Chesapeake is suburban/rural.  Let me know if you have more questions.
  • You could also live in Virginia Beach and be close to Chesapeake.  Kemspville and Glenwood (where I live) are not too far from parts of Chesapeake and are nice too.  If you actually want city living, the Ghent area of Norfolk is good.

I don't suggest living in the South Norfolk area of Chesapeake.

  • It actually depends on what your verson of "city" means. One of the comments mentioned " Ghent " which is a neighborhood in Norfolk. She is definitely correct that it's one of busier places in Hampton Roads. However, I just don't want you thinking that it's NYC style. Far from it, but depending on where you live in Ghent you can walk to markets, bars, etc. Colley Avenue is the main road. I have a friend in the Coast Guard who actually moved recently from Key West to Portsmouth, which is where I live. She drives to the base and has no issues. Olde Towne Portsmouth is similar to Ghent in that you can walk to places, it also has very old charming homes for sale, or that you can rent depending on what you want.

You wouldn't have to live in Chesapeake specifically. Portsmouth, Norfolk, and some parts of Va Beach would be just as close.

You could even consider Towne Center in Va Beach. It's more "classy city"  than Norfolk or Portsmouth

If you plan to have children while living in the area, I would stay away from ALL Portsmouth Public Schools. Western Branch, and Great Bridge areas of Chesapeake have better school systems.

    Hope this helps!
