Going x-country skiing for the first time. Help!

Fi and I are off to Aspen for a weekend conference.  There will be time to ski, but since Fi has bad knees and I have never skied in my life, so we are going to do a little cross country.  We will be able to get the equipment there, and I have a snow jacket and gloves, but I am sure that my snow pants are going to be way too heavy for skiing.

Can anyone tell me what I will need for this excursion?  I obviously won't want to spend a ton of $$, but I want a bottom layer that will make the experience enjoyable.  Point me in the right direction!

Re: Going x-country skiing for the first time. Help!

  • 1) I've only been cross country skiing once, but I'm sure the ladies on the Colorado board can help tremendously.

    2) Layers are your friend!  I would suggest if you don't want to wear full on snow pants... at least 2 layers of bottoms.  Bring a backpack to put everything in (water, a snack)  If it were me, I'd just wear the snow pants.

    3) have you thought about snowshoeing instead?  I found it much more enjoyable and technically easier than x-country skiing.
