Clogged duct ... ?

Sigh.  I have a clogged duct and it HURTS.  It feels like it's almost my entire right breast that is affected.  I am getting very little milk expressed from it.  I'm doing everything I know to do - hot compresses, pumping every two hours, massage (OWWWWWWW!!!!!) ... but it just doesn't seem to be letting up.  I don't know how I got it ... I didn't have it at 3 am but I did at 8 am ... and I think it's the worst one yet.  Sad

Re: Clogged duct ... ?

  • Have you tried a warm compress right before pumping and then ice right after?  What about trying to nurse Alyssa....her sucking may be more stronger than the pump so that may help...jsut a few thoughts.  Sorry to hear about it...I hope it goes away soon.  Also, they say to start with that side each time...did you try that.  Hope that helps.

  • Shan, interestingly enough, I nursed Alyssa several times on Thursday because I only had one bottle w/ me and was still out when she needed to eat again ... so we nursed three times and it was the right side she really wanted.  That is where the blockage is.  I am wondering if it got insufficiently drained although she seems to be a good nurser when we do.  Anyways, I have tried the warm compress right before pumping but not the ice after.  I am going to try that.  Thank you!!
  • Oh man, I'm sitting here holding my boobs because I remember how uncomfortable it was!!!!!  I had problems with my ducts clogging while pumping with Caroline.  I'm sorry that it is happening to you!

If it keeps up, give your OB a call - I believe there are things they can do to help in addition to all that you are already doing.  I never did that and I wish now that I had.....they ended my pumping for Caroline sooner than I would have liked.

  • I dont have any reccomendations :-( but OUCH!!!  I hope you can figure it out so it is not bothering you so much, for much longer

  • Ouch! I'd call your doctor if you can't get it cleared up yourself, you don't want to get an infection :(
