Homemade ornaments for first Christmas...

This will be our first Christmas together, so our holiday decorations are a bit limited. Does anyone have suggestions for cheap DIY holiday ornaments?

I'm definitely thinking gingerbread cookies and popcorn balls, as well as simple bows...

Re: Homemade ornaments for first Christmas...

  • Those are great ideas! And be sure to save a bit of money to go after Christmas. That's when I got 90% of our Christmas stuff. I have things that I got for $1.50...originally $15.00!
  • Our first Christmas I did a small tree with bows and simple ball ornaments...  I also make simple ornaments out of things around the house... For our dog, a small rawhide tied with a ribbon. Pine Cones are great, too!

Hobby Lobby has already started putting things on sale... Check them out!

And I agree with PP, go after Christmas and get stuff for next year!  Amazing savings!

  • I've seen some gorgeous trees with bows and simple ornaments.  A lot of lights helps, too.

We just came from visiting relatives, who had a gorgeous tree covered in bows.  All of the ornaments, bows, and bead garland are gold, but what made it really special was that most of the ribbons came from gifts over the years, so there was a variety of textures and shades of gold.  I noticed that the guests at their holiday part brought gifts with gold bows, probably knowing where they will wind up.

Think outside the box and use things that are special to you... maybe souvenir type stuff from your wedding and honeymoon.

We have accumulated a lot of real ornaments over the years, but some of my favorite 'ornaments' on our tree are things from special occasions, like the feather and beat boutonniere that my DH wore at our oldest daughter's wedding, and the origami cranes and other items that one daughter made from a popcorn bag when we went to see A Muppet Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve during a holiday vacation.  Seashell leis from Hawaii, a joker from a deck of cards... even hotel key cards have made it onto the tree.  All it takes is a spool of cord or ribbon, and maybe some wire to turn just about anything into an ornament.  We just brought back a seashell from our weekend trip to FL, with the intent to hang it from the tree.  I also saw a really pretty ornament on our relatives tree that was an angel made from wire. It was made completely from wire loops.  The halo was wrapped with more wire and the head was a bead, but the rest was just fine guage wire looped.

It may not be a tree like you see in the magazines, but it is certainly a tree that will make you smile and remember wonderful moments.

  • I usually just lurk around here but I wanted to butt in and say as our first year married, we have all together 3 ornaments.  I actually went to our local Dollar Tree (IDK if they're everywhere or not?!) and they had the cutest ornaments all for only $1, some were individual and some had like 3-6+ in a pack for only $1.  You can also order online!  When I told people I got them at the dollar store, NOONE could believe it, they loved them.
  • Martha has great, inexpensive, and EASY ideas.  I just did this project, http://www.marthastewart.com/article/snowy-ornaments.  I made about 15 and the cost was less then $12 for all the supplies.  I also did some cranberry garland, which will stay fresh inside for a couple weeks at least. My husband and I have had 6 xmas's so far and we still use the cheap stockings that I decorated from the dollar store from our first year :)

Try and make a little something with the year on it that you can have for all your Christmas's to come!

  • use Christmas cookie cutters & ribbon to hang as ornaments!

  • Google "Scrapbook paper ornaments" or "origami paper ornaments". There are a ton of ideas that would be perfect. Then you could buy scrapbooking paper in colors to match your decor and go wild.

You could also try quilling, if you have the time.
