Hudson vs. Nashua

DH & I currently live in Mass and we're looking for a house in either Hudson or Nashua.  We're very familiar with most areas of Nashua, but we don't really know much about Hudson passed the Stop & Shop/Walmart/Sam's area.

We don't have kids now but will in a few years.  We plan to buy a home that we will stay in for a long time.  We've seen many homes in Nashua and so far only two in Hudson, one of which we really liked.

Does anyone live in these areas that could offer advice?

What do you like/dislike about them?

Which school system is better?

Any certain areas/neighborhoos we should avoid?

Thanks so much!

Re: Hudson vs. Nashua

  • I really don't know much about either - but I do know that a lot of Nashua was built on asbestoses - mainly the downtown area....and there is a superfund site in Hudson - not sure where, but I would avoid that area...
  • DH and I just moved to Hudson (right behind stop & shop and market basket) and we love our neighborhood.  We spoke to a lot of the neighbors before buying our house and no one had a bad thing to say.
  • ok so i grew up in hudson for over 16 years and my parents still live there!  im dieing to get back to it, were just in tyngs ma though so its not horrible for me.  lol

hudsons school system is better, but what is awesome is when hs rolls around, nashua and husdon have co op. so if theres a trade that nashua hs offers that alvirne doesnt, they will bus you there for that class.  nhs has cad, thats one i now ahs doesnt....  but hudsons schools are fantastic!

i would stay away from the "apartment" complexex.  theyre not really apartments per say, but i know theres a lot of drugs in them, but on the good note, they have put mini pd stations in them and they are cleaning up well.

also check out litchfield too.  i have recently fallen in love with it. its more counrty but still close enough to everything.  but thats another thing i love about hudson.  you are close to everything, nashua, salem, manchester.  rt3 and 93 are on either side of it.  =-)

    gl with your search!

  • I grew up in Nashua & lived there for 24 years and then moved to Hudson for 9 years.  Both have their ups and downs, but I prefer Nashua.  I hated the road system in Hudson.  There are only 3 roads out of the Town and all three roads are always congested!  It would take me almost 1/2 hour to get a mile and a half to my work.  I could walk to work in the same amount of time that it would take to drive out of Hudson on a weekday morning.  Also the ride home at 5:00 wasn't any better.

Also while I was living in Hudson, there were 3 shootings in my neighborhood within the 9 years.  Twice the police would not let me go home.  That was fun.

The zoning in Hudson is also whacked!  The area I lived in had condos, elderly housing, a tatoo parlor, auto dealer, and 1/2 million dollar houses within 1/2 mile of each other.

  • We own a home in Nashua (bought almost 5 years ago) and love it here.  All of the questions you asked are really going to depend on your personal preferences, I think.  Hudson is a "town" and parts of it are pretty rural (at least according to me) and Nashua is a full-fledged "city".  Those things could both be either pluses or minuses, depending on what you want!

I'm a city girl and being too far from coveniences is something that would DRIVE ME NUTS!  I love Nashua and we live in a GREAT neighborhood here, though there are absolutely places to avoid too (just like anywhere).

I've also had experience working in the school system and here again,  I think it depends what you want your kids to get out of their education which system is better.  It would be like comparing apples and oranges.  I like Nashua because of the diverse population here and LOVE that my children will be exposed to different kinds of people and cultures when they go to school.   In my book, that's a plus but to many people it would be a minus.

We also have brand new high schools in Nashua and access to every kind of technology that you could possibly want your children to have.  The teachers union and their tactics leave a bit to be desired, IMO, but hopefully since a new contract has been ironed out recently they will have learned their lessons and take a new approach the next time that contract negotiations come up.  The teachers, themselves, are wonderful and talented though!
