Weird, personal question...

Hi Ladies!

Sorry to come and ask a personal question when I'm not very active... but I had some curiousity that I had to find out about!

My husband and I are usually extremely careful when we are intimate, but last night we had one of our first "accidents". Now, I would normally be SO paranoid, but I got my period this morning.

I am sometimes irregular, and I was actually feeling like I was ovulating a couple of days ago.

The thing is... I hear contradicting ideas. Sometimes I hear you cannot get pregnant before your period. Sometimes I hear you can be very fertile before your period.

Any thoughts? I'm not nervous... just curios.

Thanks for any advice you may have!!! Embarrassed

Re: Weird, personal question...

  • If you have your period, you most likely are not pregnant. If you're really worried, you can take a pregnancy test.

The only time you are able to get pregnant is the day you ovulate (and sperm can survive in fertile cervical fluid for up to five days I think, so that doesn't necessarily mean you have to have sex on your ovulation day to get pregnant). You usually get your period around two weeks after ovulation and you aren't fertile during that time since the cyst left behind after the egg is released produces a hormone that prevents any other eggs from being released. The egg only survives for about 12-24 hours, according to fertilityfriend.com, so it isn't likely that fertilization will take place more than one day after ovulation.

I highly recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility if you have questions about your cycle. The information in that book is very useful even if you're not trying to conceive. I hope this helps!

  • It is possible to mistake your period for implantation bleeding or spotting (if you were actually pregnant.)  Is your period now as heavy as it typically is?  On the other hand, you felt like you were ovulating, and those feelings can feel the same as PMS symptoms.  You are probably not pregnant, but like PP said, take a test if you have doubts.

  • Thanks ladies...

I figured all of what you are saying is true. It's just the first time we've ever had an "accident". EVER. So I was just curious.

My period is pretty normal as far as it being heavy.

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it! :)

  • I think you are okay but if in doubt, take a test like pp said.  But, if your period is heavy like normal, that probably isn't implantation bleeding, just your normal period.

Oh and you don't need to be a regular poster to ask questions, silly! :)
