umbrella strollers...

so I used to think these were like cheapy little things to keep in the trunk for quick jaunts to the mall.  but some of them are like $100!!

My husband is Mr. El Cheapo!  Do you think we need a fancy-ish one with recline, or should I just grap a cheapy?

any suggestions on which to try or avoid?

TIA!!

Re: umbrella strollers...

  • be prepared to pay a pretty penny for one, but in my opinion...  your money is well spent if you buy a Maclaren stroller.  i used a Maclaren Volo with the optional hood and padded seat add-ons when i was a nanny for 2 years in NYC... and if that stroller can stand up to the rigors of city sidewalks and folding-unfolding-reassembling twice daily to catch the crosstown bus, it can do anything!!  the Volo does not recline but once your baby is older, that's not even necessary anyway.  that thing folds up like a champ and is so light you can carry it on your back like you would a collapsable beach/lawn chair.
  • that sounds like a nice stroller micaela, but honestly if I do over=pay for an umbrella, i would want the incline feature for naps and stuff, I am hoping Owen will nap well into his preschool years :)

I babysat for lots of families across many income levels and found that the cheapy umbrella strollers usually did the job just fine.  But I do remember going to Disney w/ my lil bro when he was 4 and if he fell asleep at the park, it stunk that his stroller didn't recline, kwim?

    decisions...

  • What about craigslist?  We looked for a cheap on for when we go on plane trips (ie: Disney) but I wanted a a little more substance to it.
  • Oooh, great suggestion Beth!!

  • I heart craigslist now!  After getting the excersaucer for only $35 in MINT condition I check it at least once a week to see if I can snatch up and good deals.  Good luck!   :)

This is not an umbrella but it says lite.  Thought I would post it just in case.  Its listed for $45.

  • I have a Maclaren Triumph, and I LOVE it. ?I scored it as an open box return at BRU so I think I paid $99? ?Check around online, though - I know they come out with new colors every year, etc, and sometimes you can find older styles for less $$ than the new/current ones.

  • I have the Chicco umbrella stroller.  Although I don't use it often, I am happy w/ it.  I figured it was a compromise between the cheapy DH wanted & the Maclaren I wanted.  It does "recline" but it is slight.  Very lightweight, folds up easily.  Has a good umbrella (that was big for me b/c O does not like it sunny) & a basket.  W/ coupons & sales I think I got it for around $45.
  • I actually just bought the Volo, it was really highly recommended (esp for our Disney trip next month).
  • We have a McLaren Triumph and also love it!!  Its very easy to store and fold up, and it does recline... however, it does not recline to a laying down position like other, bigger strollers do.  Theres not tray in the front either... so you've got to make sure that your little one doesn't lean too forward.. and it does have a 5 point harness.  Theres not much storage space under the stroller either.   I keep the stroller in my car incase we make an unexpected trip to the mall or something like that.  But you can find cheaper umbrella strollers.  Theres really not a need to spend all that much money on one.  I would also recommend Craigslist or even EBay.  GL!!
  • I test out the Maclaren every trip to BRU... I'm wanting the red and navy one... although the pink one is on the top of my wishlist :) DH thinks I'm nuts!
