POLL: How green are you?

I've just been wondering how green people are lately since its becoming so trendy.  We've been green for a while and in NYC we were kinda forced to.

So... What do you do to make your carbon footprint a little less?

Re: POLL: How green are you?

  • 1.  We don't use plastic bags if we can help it.  I purposely tell them not to put things in a bag if it is something I can carry or put in my purse.  We use the fabric bags if necessary and I found one at Target that I can compress into my purse.

    2. We buy almost anything we can find organic.  We eat organic meat and produce except for bananas.

    3. I try not to use disposable plastic ziplocs and instead use plastic containers that can be washed.

    4. We bought expensive washer/dryer that are energy efficient as possible.

    5. We stopped using fabric softner and started using the HE bio friendly laundry detergent.

    6. We only use the dishwasher when its absolutely full.

    7. We try not to use paper plates etc unless its a party.

    8. We load the washer as full as possible.

    9. We both drive pretty full efficient cars.

    10. DH works from home 2 days a week and I'm trying to get that at my job as well.

    11. We replaced 95% of our light bulbs with energy efficient ones.

    12. We use a toaster oven when we can versus the regular oven.

    13. I try to unplug things that we don't use everyday.

    14. We walk around our neighborhood to the grocery store when its just a few items, or to dinner, or to community events.

    15. We recycle as much as possible.

    16. I try not to use bottled water but just bring a rubbermaid container to drink out of at work.

    17.  I try to buy things in recycleable containers like eggs, sugar, etc.

  • Great poll!

We use the reusable sacks at the grocery store so that we don't have to use plastic or paper bags.

We recycle all of our soda bottles.

We use some of the more "green" products (such as Seventh Generation and Green Works).

We only drive when absolutely necessary.

We turn off lights/appliances when we don't need them on.

We use tupperware instead of ziploc bags (usually).

I'm sure there's a lot of other ways we help the environment but that's all I can think of off the top of my head!

  • 1. I tell them at the grocery store to try to put as many things in a bag as possible.

    2. I unplug anything that isn't being used.

    3. We went from 3 loads of laundry to 2.

    4. The dishwasher only goes on when I can't put another thing in it.

    5. The toaster oven has become my new best friend.

    6. If I can carry it, it doesn't go in a bag.

    7. We recycle whatever we can.

    8. We turn the air up as high as we can (considering we have a puppy) to save energy when we aren't home.

    9. We work together, so we drive my car to work because it gets the best gas milage and car pool whenever possible.

    10. Laundry only gets done once a week - 2 loads only.

    11. Sheets and towels (we have SO many) only get washed once a month to save water.

    12. We have started to take 10 minute showers.

    13. We do not buy bottled water and invested in a Brita filter.

I think that's it for now.....I made add some later!

  • Take the test to find out how green you are - for fun of course!

  • I remembered a few more...

I stopped using straws as much as I can remember and the plastic lids on top of drinks in the paper cups.

I also only use 1-2 napkins instead of grabbing a hand full.

I also only use one paper towel when trying my hands in public bathrooms

I try to use dish towels (when appropriate) instead of paper towels at home.

  • I'm wearing a green shirt. ??image

  • We also participate in several of the above and also:

Live in a house that is large enough for us to get by but isn't a mansion

Added paper cellulose insulation to the attic for a better R rating.

Replaced all the single pane windows with double pane ones

Use a programmable thermostat to not cool during hours when at work

  • Wow, you guys seem to be on top of things my husband and I just started trying to become for eco friendly. We bougt the cloth bags from Publix. We changed all the light bulbs in the house to more energy efficient ones. We cut back on our trips to Miami to save gas. We try not to use the dish washer more. I like this poll, it gives me good ideas. I like the bucket idea!

We also are checking out this internet business we invested in that gives you cash back for shopping online in an effort to control the gas you spend. It also has a sister site that's all eco friendly/organic products.

This is our site: www.shoptoearn.net/savegas or www.shoptoearth.net/savegas

It really seems to deliver their mission. :-) I'll keep you guys posted on our progress. My cousin got some great products and has made an good chunk of cash on referrals and shopping. The extra cash well def. help out.
