High school girl :: Spa gift card (I love the mani/pedi idea!), or maybe a book about college/planning for the future/financial planning for women
Twenty someting boy :: Gift card to eat out at a favorite restaurant, basket of "house care items" like laundry soap, dishwasher soap, etc (ok, I know, it's totally boring but pratical!)
Ok, I fear I have not been very helpful at all. GL to you--may you do better than I did!
When I was in HS I loved getting GF cards to clothing stores like Macys, Nordstroms, Kohls (places like that). I also liked magazine subscriptions. GF cards to restaurants are nice especially if she is dating someone they can go out since most teens don't have much $. Movie tickets, DVDs, iTunes GF card, Mani/Pedi GF card, nice pair of earrings, pretty scarf, slippers. I think teen girls are easy to shop for.
For the guys, a GF to Best Buy is nice since they can get video games, Cds, DVDs, etc.. there
