9 yo girl- this is making me crazy

I am trying to complete my Christmas shopping.  The only one left to buy for is my 9yo stepdaughter.  The issue I'm having is that if it doesn't have a screen or remote, or mouse, or controller, she's not interested (with few exceptions).  Most games for DS and Wii, her mother says they already have (ugh. not going there).

So far, all I've gotten her pajamas and a jewelry making set.  I'm thinking of just taking her shopping after the holidays and she can pick out what she wants, so I'm about to just get gift cards.  I just don't want her to have nothing to open while her brother tears through presents.

Any ideas? What are 9 year old girls into these days?  Is an Easy Bake Oven completely lame?

Re: 9 yo girl- this is making me crazy

  • I have a 10 year old daughter. It's their age group that is messing you up. They are stuck between toys and being teens.

    Last year I got her....

Cosmetics- not cheapy baby stuff but actual proper adult stuff. It is so much better for the skin. And limited it to lightly tinted lip gloss, clear nail polish with glitter, that kind of thing. It satisfied the grown up part of her.

Hooked on the 39 clues. I gave her every book that was out at that time, plus a couple card packs. It was interactive just enough with the computer to get her interested, but since it was reading it was good for her brain. And gave her eyes a rest.

I also got her the spiderwick chronicles trunk. It has books as well as a few extras.

    Good luck!

  • At that age I was into books, jelwery making, and anything that I could make myself. What about a small sewing machine and teaching her how to sew? Klutz makes a lot of How to books, like friendship bracelets and stuff. I had one at that age, I had so much fun making them for my friends.

  • nicker is right - it's a hard age.  This is the first year I've had any issues with buying a gift for my 9 year old niece.

This is what we ended up getting her:

It's a silk screening set, so she can design and make her own shirts.

  • My 9yr old cousin is all about the privacy and high-tech... anything that keeps her little bro from bugging her.

I think these are really cute (my aunt's getting them for her):

She also has a diary that she really loves - it has voice recognition to "unlock" it (so even if her little bro overhears her password, only her voice can open it)

Also, when my sister and I were in that in-between stage (and even when we were teenagers) my Grandma used to give us cash and then take us shopping in the days after Christmas to take advantage of the sales. It's still a happy memory for me - I think I appreciate it even more now than I did then! So this is always fun.

  • Ladies, thank you! Love all of these suggestions and now I can cross her off of my shopping list!

Love the silk screening idea.  Already got her a jewelry kit so she can make bracelets and necklaces and such- my mom suggested a jewelry box (she gave me one when I was that age, it was very simple and I still have it).  Also found a littlest pet shop paws off electronic diary (has voice recognition so she can keep all her "secrets").

Love that bedroom intercom idea- I think her and her brother would be hilarious with that!, but it's out of stock Sad

Going now to hunt for some simple makeup (love that idea too, because her mother will never teach her how to apply makeup properly and I wish someone had taught me) for her stocking.

I'll round out the rest with some clothes and gift cards and after the holidays we'll have a girls day- me, her, her aunties- I know she'll love that.

  • SO's 10 yr old daughter wanted Twilight/Edward stuff this year. His 12 yr old wanted Twilight/Jacob stuff...lol go figure.

Other than that I know his 10 yr old also likes Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers and all those other Disney stars...Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.

  • Lol at the "Team Jacob," "Team Edward."  I found her a Hannah Montana DVD game, which I'm sure my DH will be thrilled to know.

You ladies were a huge help- I refuse to buy them one more video game, but didn't want to get her stuff she'd open and toss aside- the suggestions were great- thank you all sooooo much!

  • I usually just lurk on this board for ideas and I have an almost 10 yr old niece who wanted the Twilight Scene It game. So that is what I got her.

As far as the makeup goes, you may want to OK that with  her mom.  9 is way too young to start wearing makeup IMO.  And people wonder why 11-12 yr olds are giving BJ's in bathrooms.  Kids should be kids.

  • I got a make your own jewelery box at Target (about $15, toy department.) If you did go for make-up you could do the lip-smackers (fun flavors), nail polish and yummy bubble bath, bath beads etc

Thanks for the input.  Fwiw, her mother was considering allowing her to dye her hair hot pink, until I pointed out that she has beautiful dark hair and if she starts bleaching it at 9, she'll have straw for hair by the time she's 15.  As far as make up goes, it would be limited to some glitter nail polish and lip gloss.  I had glitter nail polish and lip gloss well before 9 and I have NEVER given a BJ in a bathroom, but that's a message for another board I suppose.

Sucky parenting, peer pressure, the media, and a million more reasons are why 12 year olds are giving BJ's in bathrooms.  Glitter nail polish doesn't even make the list.  Another reason might be exposing young girls to movies and books that are too mature for them - you know like buying a nine year old a game about a movie that's rated PG 13.  Pot meet Kettle.

I completely agree with this. I wouldnt be letting my kids watch those types of movies or read those books. Of course I am not the parent in the situation I am in.

I apologize. I misread the make up post and I didn't realize it was limited to  glitter polish and gloss.  I thought it was full on makeup.  As far as the game, I don't agree with it AT ALL but that is what her mom told me to get her. I too think she is too young.
