s/o: picking a team

Have you ever just decided to be a fan of a team?

I grew up a Gator fan, and i never really paid attention to the pros until I started working at a sports bar. Even then, it was just because I liked to be knowledgeable when interacting with guests.  But then I met DH and he was a huge Dolphins fan. I spent 2 or 3 seasons harrassing him about how awful they were just to tease him.

Then I realized that that schtick was going to get old fast, so last year I became a Dolphins fan. I had been playing FF for a few years and started liking pro-football more and more and he was already a fan of them, so it was an easy decision. Coincidentally, it was a good year to be a Fins fan. They went from 1-15 to 11-5.

Re: s/o: picking a team

  • I decided to become a Mavs fan when I was in high school. I've always been a basketball fan, but Oklahoma didn't get our pro team until last year, and Dallas is close to my hometown. I just started watching their games one day, and soon, I was a full-blown fan. I was there through the Championship run [and monumental collapse], the Big Three...all that from the 2000s. Still love those boys.

But because I'm such a big Mavs fan, I didn't think I'd like the Thunder when they moved into Oklahoma. But...I gave it a shot, went to two games last year, and I'm now hooked. I think I may be a bigger Thunder fan this season than Mavs because I've been to most of the Thunder home games...

  • I  became an Indy fan when I went to IN for school and Tony Dungy (who I worship) became their coach that same season.
  • when we were kids at our grandparents house for holidays etc. we were told that we could pick between two teams: Ohio State or ND (I come from a huge Irish Catholic family) and I picked Ohio State, because I liked their colors better :) and thus my love was born...there is still great division between my uncles with the OSU and ND hate/love

as for my NFL and MLB teams I stay true and cheer for Ohio teams..Go Bengals, and Reds

  • I'm a NY Giants fan bc DH is.....not "just" because he is, but its more that if I have to watch all their games and if our dog has to wear Giants gear and if I'm going to hear about the Giants non-stop and if his moods on Sundays are dependent on the Giants - then I might as well be a fan, haha.  Plus overexposure to anything sucks me in, so being exposed constantly to Giants games and talk sucked me in.  (and I always root for the Ravens over the Giants.)

I cheer for Rutgers when they're playing to make him happy (he's a jersey boy for sure!)  but only to make him happy.....I don't really care about college sports. I like college basketball and I cheer for Maryland bc, well, I grew up in Maryland, but I went to a D3 school that didn't even have a football team so college sports kind of go over my head, except for lacrosse.

  • Yes.  I was a Dallas Cowboys fan for a while.  I had a huge crush a guy who was a fan of theirs, so I decided to start following the team.  I was a fan for a few years but eventually it tapered off.  Pro football doesn't seem to do for me what college ball does.

I've also become a fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers b/c that is DH's team.

  • When I decided to go to UNL for school, I became a Husker. I have always been a BC fan because my Dad and grandpa went there.

  • I have thought about "becoming" a Georgia Tech fan since we live right down the street. That would be much more convenient than being a WVU fan. But I just don't think that I can transfer my Mountaineer madness to any other school. Am I really going to jump up and down and scream when a Tech player makes an interception?
  • I "became" a fan of the Saints when Drew Brees went there.  He's a former Purdue QB, and was the QB when I was in school there.

I also kind of became a Pats fan in college, b/c my roommate and I thought Tom Brady was hot when he played for Michigan.  One day we were doing our usual Sunday-NFL watching and he was in for Bledsoe.  And still really hot.  So we cheered for the Pats all season [and they won the Super Bowl that year], and I've continued to do so except when they were playing the Colts.  Unlike most Colts fans, I don't hate the Pats.  :)

  • I never really paid much attention to football until I started hanging out with DH and my current group of friends about 7 years ago.  Most of them are huge football fans and also spent hours playing Madden. I quickly learned more about football through all of them and really liked it.

When we started our FF league a few years ago I was informed that I "needed to pick my own team"  DH told me I couldn't pick the same team as the other guys (still not sure why but whatever)  I didn't want to choose a team that someone else hated.  So I picked the Chargers, mostly because they were blue and yellow, the same colors as the St Louis Blues. lol I'm still not totally dedicated to them though.  I still cheer for the Bills, Packers, and Saints too.  Also dislike the Pats, Vikings, and Dolphins because of DH and our best friend (the Packers fan).

  • I went to Southern Miss for grad school, so I've started cheering for them.  Also, since moving to Texas, I've been around a lot of A&M fans.  Since neither of these teams play UK, I don't have any worries.  I also tend to cheer for pro teams that have UK players on them if they don't play the Reds or the Bengals.  Living in Houston, I've picked up cheering for the Astros and Rockets too.

  • I always watched college sports before DH.  He is a huge college fan too, but also a Giants fan.  I've sort of adopted them as a team too.  I enjoy cheering for them, I just wasn't that into the NFL before.

  • I decided to be a Houston Rockets fan when I was younger. I grew up in Oklahoma and was born an Oklahoma State fan. When we moved to Houston we kind of started watching the Rockets. It was right when they'd won the finals a couple years in a row and when Hakeem, Clyde, Sam, and Vernon all played for them. I am still pretty partial to the Rockets and I like to keep tabs on all those players I once "knew".

  • My high school basketball coach told us to watch college basketball as a learning tool. Duke was on tv a lot, so I became a Duke fan. I ended up going to grad school there but I was fan before I showed up on campus. Now they are my favorite college team (my undergrad was D3). I also cheer for Penn State since I grew up in PA and my dad went there. I will cheer for Georgia Tech if they are not playing Duke since that is where DH went.

I also starting cheering for the 49ers as a kid (my family are Steelers fans). They are still my team, but they are hard to follow on the east coast.

  • I never cared about the NFL before I started dating DH, who is a die-hard Dolphins fan.  We live in New England, so that's like blasphemy up here, and I think that's kind of fun.  I also have something against fair-weather fans in any sport (I bleed Boston Red Sox, so I've learned the hard way just how hard it can be to stand by your team through anything and everything), and when the Pats started winning Super Bowls, it made me sick how all of a sudden everyone was a fan, so that only reinforced my Dolphins fan-dom and hatred of the Pats.

Sort of the same with NHL - I've always been into hockey, but before college, I was mostly into college hockey, when I followed it at all, and I never really had a team.  I guess I cheered for the Bruins because they're the local team, but my heart was never really behind it.  I went to college in eastern PA, and the Flyers games were on TV every night, and I just got sucked into it, and I've been a Flyers fan ever since.

Baseball and Basketball, I'm all local - Red Sox and Celts all the way.
