Nicole and other Warm Weather peeps

My boss is moving across the country to Southern CA.  We were talking about it and musing over what Christmas is like in warm climates.  We're curious- does everyone have a fake Christmas tree?  Are there live pine trees available? Do people really decorate palm trees?

LoL, excuse my ignorance, but I really am curious!

Re: Nicole and other Warm Weather peeps

  • My family in south TX and Mex all have fake trees, and I have never seen real trees there.  I'm sure they're available for a premium (and must be shipped).  I've never seen a decorated palm tree; it would disturb me.  There are some warm climates that grow fir trees naturally (like in some parts of Mex); maybe they decorate those?  It still gets cold; so, the wintry feeling is semi-existent.

  • I'm in Southern Louisiana and warm Christmas' SUCK!!!!  Nothing is worse than getting to wear shorts at Christmas time, its such a downer for the whole season.  I've always had a real tree... not sure how expensive they are compared to colder areas but we got a 6-7 foot noble fir for $45 this year.  But our weather fluctuates a lot - it snowed a little north of New Orleans last Friday night and today its in the 70s, our winters are a total crap shoot!
  • I'm in the southern part of northern California (if that makes sense).  We do have a couple places within driving distance to cut your own tree but that's really pricey.  There are plenty of temporary lots with cut trees though so lots of people do real trees around here.  I have seen decorated palm trees in people's front yards and on main city streets.  That always makes me happy... who cares if it's the wrong type of tree!
  • I live in So FL and we do have places that sell real trees and I think they sell for about $70 but I could be wrong as we have a fake tree. As far as decorating palm trees, a lot of people here do put lights on there trees. I can honestly say that once we plant the plam trees that we want in our yard, they will have lights on them.

From the way our weather has been this winter, it looks like I will be wearing shorts on christmas day. Heck if the temp is right we may be swimming.

  • We are in north Florida, and while I've always had a "fake" tree, I know plenty of people that have real trees up.  They sell them at the Home Depot and Lowes, and even out front of the grocery store!  I think there are even some Christmas tree farms up here, where you can go and pick out your own tree.  BTW it is 80 degrees here today..... and I have spent many Christmas days on the beach, when I was younger!
  • We have always had a real Christmas tree!  And everyone I know gets a real tree.  We buy ours at Home Depot and sometime at a Christmas Tree Farm (yes, the actually can grow Christmas Trees in Southern CA).  No one I know decorates Palm Trees but my aunt decorates a cactus every year which is kinda funny.

  • Okay, I'll admit it.  If I had cactus, I'd decorate it!

    LoL!

  • I am originally from New Orleans and DH is from south FL and we both have always had real trees. When we lived in the FL panhandle we had real ones every year (like pp said got it at Lowes or something) and I never thought they were pricey. In FL I have seen people decorate the palm trees outside of their house, just like some people decorate the bushes outside of their house. It was never weird to me. It did suck though to be wearing short sleeves every year on Christmas day but this year is our first Christmas living in Asheville, NC and I gotta say I miss the warmth! I would die with all that snow Melissa and some of you others have! My blood is waaaay too thin.
  • i live in FL and i hate when people decorate their palm trees and boats. Its like they are trying too hard to make it christmas-like lol They do sell christmas trees here but a lot of people get fake because they dry out so quickly.

I cant wait to get out of here, I like to see seasons and FL is not cuttin' it! I've been here for 20 yrs and its time to get out!

  • We lived in Southern California, Riverside County east of Los Angeles for 6 years.  We had a fake tree, as did lots of folks mostly because it is so warm and so DRY.  A real tree lasts about 5 days and then becomes a fire hazard.  Lots of people had lots of lights and painted wooden pieces in their yards.  I have 6 angels, ranging from 5 to 8 feet tall,  all handmade and hand painted and all different, that were lit with spotlights and then all the lights to go on the house.  We had 3 large palm trees but didn't light them cause they were WAY too tall.  My neighbor pounded small metal spikes in a grid all around his front yard and then strung white lights back and forth until the yard was covered so it would look like snow.  He did the same thing on the roof :)  We were nuts!
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!

That's a really creative idea.  I assume the dry weather meant no lawn to mow?  (Hence he was able to cover his lawn in lights?)
