I posted this on my anniversery board, but thought I should also ask here.
My dad is a classical music nut and he's gotten me into it, starting at the age of six when I started playing piano. Every year he gives me a mixed CD of classical music of varying categories.
This
year, I want to give him a CD of some of my favorite Christmas Carols -
but not the ones we grew up on. I'm talking about modern ones that
have come out that are well done, but aren't too heavy as to give my
classical music loving father a heart attack.
I need suggestions. Do you have any favorite Christmas Carols done by modern singers (... say... 1980's or later)?
So far I have:
Josh Grobin "O Holy Night"
Barenaked Ladies / Sarah McLauglin "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"
Michael Buble "I'll be home for Christmas"
Trans-Siberian Orchestra "Christmas Canon"
Manheim Steamroller - "Carol of the Bells" (-I'm hedging on this one...)

My new favorite is the Christmas version of Beautiful World by Jim Brickman & Adam Crossley. I love, love, love it!!
(It's the first song that plays on www.jimbrickman.com if you want to hear it.
)
I don't know if you can get your hands on it, but last year DH and my favorite carol was from a cd called "Carols for a Cause" which featured Broadway casts singing carols. Our fave was the cast of Spring Awakening singing "I wonder (As I wander)"
I also love the David Bowie/Bing Crosby version of Little Drummer Boy
Cyndi Lauper - In the Bleak Midwinter
Celine Dion's "O Holy Night" gives me chills. It's my absolute favorite version of my favorite Christmas song.
I also like Mariah Carey's "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and Faith Hill's "Joy to the World".
Amy Grants' "Breath of Heaven (Mary's song)" is beautiful as is her singing "Sleigh Ride".
Katharine McPhee- "O Come All Ye Faithful"
Josh Groban- "The Christmas Song"
Martina McBride- "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
Rascal Flatts- "White Christmas"
Kenny Chesney- "Silver Bells"
Celtic Women- "Away in a Manger"
David Archuleta- "What Child is This"
Gloriana- "Silent Night"
ETA: Sorry, I keep adding more. This list will be long!
My MIL is friends with him! He's really a nice guy. I love that song too.
"Mary did you know?"
"O Drummer Boy"
"Tender Tennessee Christmas"
Tender Tenneessee Christmas, By Amy Grant
Mary did you know?- by anyone really. My sister sings an awesome version of it especially. I will be happy to send you her version.
O Drummer Boy, by Josh Groban or Faith Hill
"All I Want for Christmas is a Real Good Tan"! Love that song!
Ditto on this. I love anything by Jim Brickman!
I love the Mariah Carey song:
All I want for Christmas is Yooooouuuuuuuuuu Ouuuuu Baaaabbbyyy!
Gets me singing every time. Might be too much for your Dad though.
Mariah Carey - "All I Want For Christmas"
Boys To Men - "Let It Snow"
I really like his duets on this album - "Christmas in Dixie" with Randy from Alabama, and "Pretty Paper" with Willie Nelson. I'm not a huge country fan, but I do like this album.
One of my very favorite contemporary carols is "Let It Be Christmas" by Alan Jackson. It's very pretty, and I love the lyrics.
