Thinking ahead..summer party

This is long and complicated.  My friends and I are all turning 40 scattered throughout the next year or so.   We have moved to TX and everyone else is in Michigan & Ohio.   We still have our summer house in Michigan and I go back for a month and DH comes for 2 weeks (this year in late July & August).  Since we are so far away, we all can't get together  for each birthday, so I was thinking of an "August is Everybody's Birthday Party".  One of our group has a little local band, so DH and I are going to hire him & the other members to play and at first we thought about having it at our house, but we are right next to the police station and right down town.  We considered renting a different house out on the lake, but still neighbors to deal with regarding band noise issues.

So...what if we have it at a local bar.  This is a resort town on a river...we have 3 bars within walking distance of my house.   We know the owners and I know they would let us hire the band to play there.  The bar we prefer is a dive (we have all hung out there over the years) but it has the largest dance floor, we know that owner best, he probably would let us bring in some food if we bought some wings/mini tacos/pizza and the booze from him too.

We don't want to pay for everyone's booze all night, but we would definately have a tab for part of the evening.  Is this weird to do?  Should we get a more private venue so we can buy the booze ourselves and host it all?  Anything else I am not thinking of in planning this out?

I can probably get my sister to take everyone home from where ever we decide to do this.

Re: Thinking ahead..summer party

  • If you're close to everybody can't you just say BYOB (buy your own booze) and nobody be taken aback by it?

  • Is it possible to make it a day time thing so noise isn't an issue late?  Just a thought.

The nice thing about the dive bar is no cleaning up afterwards.

As far as drinks at the bar goes, I would work out a 1-hour open bar with the owner, and include that in the invites, so people know.

    Sounds like fun!

  • I don't know how your neighbors are, but when I held a big party, I let them know about the party ahead of time. I told them they were welcome to come by and that if the noise was a problem to please let me know.Give the same heads up to the police department. Also, make sure that the music is done by a certain time.

I've never had a problem with this, but you know would know better than me.

If not, I don't think it's weird to hold it at a bar.  And since it's a joint party, I don't necessarily think you need to foot the bill for the bar tab.  In this case, I think cash bar would be fine.

  • Doing it at a bar makes sense.

If you really feel responsible, do a 1 hour open bar, then make people pay after that, but if you've been friends with these people for ages, there's no reason you should have to pay.

  • Thanks for the input.  We have one neighbor who is just a paininourass, so I really don't think I want to ask her over.  She is the busiest of busy bodies.  Blech.

I just wanted to see if it seems weird to invite the crew out to the bar.  I can't see any of our friends being remotely offended, but I want it to be fun and reasonably hassle free for us too.  We have lots of memories in the bar I mentioned Stick out tongue.  And FWIW, we will be having lots of family friendly cook-outs while we are there at our house to include all the kids, I wanted this to be a more adult-themed birthday shindig rather than a afternoon kind of party.
