Name Change help

Does anyone have any suggestions for an easy way to change everything over to my married name?  What steps did you girls take?

Thank you!

Re: Name Change help

  • You have to start with Social Security, then your license (DMV), then you can easily do the rest (credit cards, bank accounts, insurance, passport, etc). I believe the Social Security office wants to see your original marriage certificate but the others should be fine with just a copy. I'd take care of the first two (in person) and then just do the rest one by one. Check websites or call places to find out how they specifically want it to be done. Hope this helps a little! Wow, I did this almost two years ago now! Congrats and have fun :)

  • Laurie covered it... but be sure to change little things like CVS cards to make life easier... I should take my own advice!
  • make sure you get a few photo copies of your marriage certificate.  Credit cards, ez pass and some utilities will want a copy if you want to change your name on the accounts
  • Thanks for the help girls.  Will photo copies due or do I need to order offical copies from the town?
  • I think I ended up getting two official copies. The majority of places will only need a photo copy. I think they (the city /town hall) charge you each time you show up for another original so it'd be best to get how ever many official copies the first time you go- you'd save a little money. At least that's how it was when I did it!  My memory is fuzzy but I think I had to mail an original with my new passport application but if anyone else wanted an original (ie SS or DMV) they just looked at it in person and didn't keep it.

  • The only time you need the original is with the SS office. All others, a photocopy will suffice. LOVE your siggy pic, btw :)
