XP: Lost all of my ipod apps

Who can tell me what I (really, DH, he's the one that synched it) did wrong?

I loaded a bunch of apps directly onto the ipod a couple days ago.  The next night he synched it and they were wiped out.Angry  I think he was supposed to authorize the computer to allow access from the ipod and then transfer the files to the computer.  (but, for some reason, I can't get that to work last night).

They are free aps, so it's not a matter of "buying" again, it's just the time. When I go to my itunes account, I can get a list of what I've downloaded, but the apps aren't in my library.

Would it work the same if I added the apps on itunes on my computer and then synched the ipod?  Then all of the apps would be saved in itunes, right?
