Re: Gift for a 1 yr old ?
I got this: http://tinyurl.com/yee6cqp for my friends' son for his first birthday upon multiple recommendations from other nesties. It was a hit! He absolutely loves it.

Books are always fantastic for gifts, how about some of your favorites from childhood?
And while it isn't necessary to bring gifts for the boys, I would - I was the older sister, so I remember loving when people included me also! I'm going to visit a friend this weekend who just had her third, and I'm bringing gifts for the older two.
My 1 year old nephew has one of these and he loves it!?
I usually do a savings bond for 1st birthdays. It helps towards future college costs and prevents from getting duplicates.
I also do the savings bond thing. Usually that and an outfit or a book, or if they don't have one already, a piggy bank.
