Vent: HIVES!

Oh, man, this blows.  I woke up yesterday morning with two bumps on the back of my legs that itched and felt a little like the hives I got chronically as a pre-teen.  By late last night those two bumps were several inches in diameter, and now this morning I have hives all over!  From what I was reading online, this can happen in pregnancy as a reaction to hormone surges.

My doctor said that it is okay to take benadryl (which did usually help in the past), but a few websites say don't take it in the first trimester.  I know I should just listen to my doctor and take it already, but now I'm paranoid about taking anything, so I'm just sitting here, an blotchy, swollen, itchy mess!

Any suggestions for me?  How can I STOP ITCHING??????

Re: Vent: HIVES!

  • being a redhead i have ridiculously sensitive skin-whenever i get irritations i take buttermilk (very cold) with some salt and put cold compresses on the area works like a charm.  another great product is made by FRESH www.fresh.com they have an umbrian clay soap that saved me when i was travellilng through brazil having huge allergic reactions to mosquitos (dont ask) take the soap wet it an dab on area. hope that helps and feel better
  • I took benadryl in the first tri due to a bad case of poison ivy.  Doctor approved it and it was the only remedy that worked.
  • Awww, that sucks. I'm allergic to a lot of stuff so I get hives a lot too. I also had a horrible allergic reaction to the pollen or something in the air when I visited Oregon when I was 4 weeks pregnant with this pg. I think it was the pg hormones and the white part of my eye swelled all the way outside of my eyelids. MH took me to ER since it was a Sunday. Anyway, I did take only one dose of Benadryl (it's already on a pre-approved list from my OBG) and then I slept and drank a lot. So I'd suggest resting and drinking lots of water. By the time I woke up, it was a lot better and went uphill from there. If it's really bad, I'd just take one dose but I'd probably wouldn't take any more than that since I don't like taking meds, even when I'm not pg and esp when I'm pg. For hives, try to wear looser clothing around that area too. Hope you feel and get better soon!

  • THis happened to me as well but not as severe as all over. My doctor sent me to a dermatologist who proscribed a cream to help with the inflamation and itch. I thought dermatologist was a waste of money but my doctor wanted to rule everything out.

I also switched to Aveeno bath gel and that helped ALOT.

The hives came and went for about 2 months and completely diappeared now. I could have a flare up next trimester though,
