critique my Christmas menu

DH and I are hosting Christmas Eve dinner for our parents and siblings (total 12 people). My dad and I are both pretty picky (dad doesn't eat many vegetables).

Appetizers:

  • Calamari, lemon, marinara sauce
  • Bruschetta
  • Beer cheese fondue (mom heard great things and is insisting on trying it)
  • Olives (sisters insist on it)

Dinner:

  • Beef tenderloin
  • Garlic mashed potatoes
  • Grilled asparagus with lemon
  • Corn
  • Italian bread

Dessert:

  • Jello (tradition)
  • Cheesecake filing in chocolate cups with graham crumb garnish
  • Assorted cookies
  • French silk chocolate pie
  • Whatever our families bring

Does it seem cohesive? Enough food and variety for people? I want to make beets as well, but DH says no one will eat them but me.

Re: critique my Christmas menu

  • Can I come? It all sounds really good!
  • PS I might need your calamari recipe
  • Sounds great, well-balanced.  I don't think anything's missing.

If you want to make beets, make them, but only if you're prepared to eat all the leftovers ;)  That's how I gauge whether or not to make a dish lol

A local restaurant here does a beer cheese dip that they're famous for.  It has the consistency of a fondue and it's the greatest thing ever.  I'm sure yours will be good.

  • Thanks ladies, if I can find good beets I'll get them. I think the color would add something different to the table.

PS the calamari comes from Trader Joe's. I toss it in the oven and use my own marinara. :P

PPS I also heard TJ has a beer cheese fondue. I'm not making that from scratch.

PPPS I am mortified to admit I'm buying so much pre-packaged food! I normally dislike holidays with anything not homemade! I generally make everything myself but am just not in the mood this year. Don't judge me! lol

Hahaha! I think your menu sounds great.  You're cooking enough on your own, it's ok to have some things that are premade. Wink

  • What a great menu! Think your guests will be very pleased...and the dinner a huge success!

The beer fondue sounds so good! A local eatery makes a wine cheese fondue, and it's divine.

  • Sounds great, although I'd probably switch out the Italian bread for dinner rolls, they seem to go better with tenderloin and the rest of your dinner menu.  But really, even with the Italian bread, it looks great!
