He has a Nano and you want to get him the next thing up?
A few questions for you: Which version of Nano? The one with the video camera or a previous version? Why do you want to get him the next thing up? Is the current one broken, or is he just tired of it?
I ask because in terms of iPods, there is only one "next thing up" and that is the iPod Touch, and if you're only upgrading for the sake of upgrading, then that's your choice.
If you're upgrading because the old Nano broke, then why not get a new generation Nano? I understand that everyone so far is suggesting the iPod Touch, but depending on what he uses it for the iPod Nano could be perfect for what he uses it for.
And don't forget that there are other companies that make mp3 players besides Apple, and usually for much lower prices.

The only way the Classic would be a step up from the Nano is in terms of storage. In every other way it's a step down. It has less functionality than a Nano (no video camera) and less durability (it's the only iPod still sold with moving parts). I also didn't mention it because most people don't need that much storage space anyway.
The big downside to the Classic is that because of it's moving parts it's not recommended for use during workouts. I have a Classic that I use almost every day, but I have to use something different for when I run.
