You are too cute!  My co-worker was the one that introduced me into making my own laundry detergent - I love it.  Here is the recipe for it.  All ingredients should be found at Publix.  Dr. Bronners should be in the organic heath aisle.

 1 bar Dr. Bronner's castile bar soap - finely grated (I like Lavender and Peppermint)

1/2 c Washing Soda

1/2 c  Borax

1/4-1/2 c Baking Soda

In a large pot, heat 3 pints of water. Add the grated bar soap and stir until melted. Then add the washing soda, baking soda, and borax. Stir until powder is dissolved, then remove from heat.

In a 2 gallon clean pail, pour 1 quart of hot water and add the heated soap mixture. Top pail with cold water and stir well.

You can also add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Use 1/2-1 cup per load, shaking or stirring soap before each use (it will gel a little).

  • Thanks, I am going to have to try this one day!  How much cold water do you use to top the pail and what do you use to store it in?

  • You are welcome.  You make it to 2 gallons.  I used two 1 gallon glass jugs (they were unused leftovers from a retiring lab).  But, I would have just used an old kitty litter plastic pail.  Or get a paint bucket from Home Depot. I bet you can get some cute glass containers at the thrift store too. Let me know how it works out for you.

    Oh, and I am giving these as gifts to DH's eco-conscious mom's.

  • Wow this might motivate me to actually do laundry!  I am ordering stuff online right now like a crazy person.  What can I say, I obsess easily!

  • Are you kidding me?  As soon as my friend told me how it easy it was, I hit up all my local stores to find the washing soda. Publix supposedly has it.

    This is was the cost breakdown:

    Dr.Bronners = 3.99

    Washing soda = 3.99

    Borax = 4.99

    But the soda and borax will last awhile.

  • Can you use the liquid Dr. Bronners soap?

  • Yes.  I am just not sure of the proportions for the above recipe.  I want to try the powder recipe (#10) from here that uses liquid dr. bronners:
