Please convince me not to move to Antioch!
DH and I are wanting to move into Nashville. He works there now and the drive to Clarksville is starting to wear on him. We found a house that we love in Antioch! Seriously, it's perfect and in our price range.
However, everyone we talk to says to stay away from that area like the plague. I even read it is bad in a post below.
We don't want to move to an area where it wouldn't be safe for me to live alone with a small child. It's something that comes with the territory in DH's line of work.

Re: Please convince me not to move to Antioch!
I agree with this. Granted, I don't live in Antioch, but I sometimes feel people tend to over exaggerate. If you love the house and it's in your price range - then you should consider it. My suggestion in determining the neighborhood is to drive around the neighborhood for a visit at certain times during the day. What's it like in the morning and in the evening? Do you see people out walking dogs, kids playing, etc. If you see people out doing things like jogging, walking pets, etc - then it's reasonable to guess they think the neighborhood is safe enough to do those things.
Also - not sure if you have this there, but check to see if your local police department has a crime tracker/map feature. Here, our police department has one and you can see what sort of crimes took place by zip code. It's a neat feature and is pretty handy.
HTH and Good Luck.
Thanks ladies. DH and I will look into getting a report from the police station. I think it would ease my mind a bit. I know I shouldn't be listening to everyone's opinions but I'm so unfamiliar with the area, I can't help but take to heart what people say.
We'll give the area a chance. We've found two more houses that we are very interested in so we will just have to wait and see what happens when we give those a second look as well.
I'll agree with the above, and I do live in the area. I feel safe in the area, it's multicultural, all kinds of backgrounds. And hey, we're not house-bankrupt! It's nice to own a home and have enough for repairs and upgrades. It's not a "leave your door unlocked at all times" area, but let's be honest, no place is anymore. A drive-around of the area and a trust-your-own-gut works wonders, especially since there are pockets that really aren't great (even in the darlings of the area to live in). The only caveat I have is that the apartment complexes are of a different matter altogether. Not a great place for apts.
A good share of the negative about Antioch seems to come from a lot of people that have never actually live there. They just hear about it thirdhand.
Good luck househunting!
ditto the above. it really depends on where you are in antioch, too.
i did case management for a while and some of the neighborhoods are not so safe, but most of them are very family friendly. another thing to consider is the schools. have you looked at the city data website and forum? that's a good resource, too.
good luck!

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I agree that neighborhoods can vary within a community. I would be careful which street I moved to in Antioch and agree that it is better towards Brentwood.
Also, I would really double check into what schools the house is zoned for if you plan to live there long enough to have kids going to school. I have clients enrolled in schools in Antioch that I sure wouldn't want my kid to attend. Good luck on the house search!
I used to live in an apartment in Antioch, Nashboro Villiage, off of Murfreesboro road. I did not like living there. We were new to the area and my husband got a job at DELL so he wanted to be close to the office. But i did not feel safe there. There were always shady things going on in the parking lot. i.e gang grafetti (sp?), drug deals, cops in the parking lot, and not in a "hey were just here to keep you safe" , more like "where did that guy go who we say breaking into a car" vibe. I even heard gun shots one night real late, and then about 10 minutes later it was blue lights every where.
Yes their are nicer areas of Antioch and it can depend on the neighborhood, but keep in mind, where you will be shopping and doing most of your errends, i didn't like going to the Kroger or Walmart or the banks in that whole area b/c of all the unsavory characters that were around. The closer you get to Brentwood, the nicer.
And if you are going to be there long enough for your LO to be in public school... it is a really bad school in that area. We moved to Wilson county just to make sure our kids would be in a better school district.
This is just my two cents. If you really love the house and YOU feel safe then you should go for it. But do some due dilligence and check out the neighborhood at different times, and look at the surround businesses to see if that is a place you would like to be spending alot of your time.
that's great! we're in the same area, in Hermitage, and we LOVE it
i hope you get the house!
Dh and I used to live in Hermitage before we moved to Lebanon. We liked it there alot.
I've run into the same issue. But we found a perfect house for us today in Cane Ridge and it is one of our top 3 picks. I think we are probably going to go with it. It makes me nervous, but our closest friends in town live near there too, and if they live there it can't be all that bad. I like that we get more house for our money. Driving around the neighborhood there were kids playing and the whole neighborhood was out! It was great!
Now, obviously everyone has their own standards and opinions, but Antioch is one of those places that is not up-and-coming, it's practically on the decline. So re-sale isn't likely to be good.
My husband and I lived there a few years ago and since then many of the businesses around where we were has closed. Also, gangs are on the rise and they're mostly in ANtioch, from what I'm readin gin the paper. In fact, even when we were there in '04/'05 there was, I guess what you'd call, a drive by. Some car came in and fired off a jillion rounds at an apartment in the complex. (they were a terrible shot though, as noone was injured).
On the other hand, I'm sure it depends on what parts of Antioch your'e in, and it depends on what your own preferences are. My husband and I are looking at houses in East Nash now and are still finding ourselves tempted to buy a place in Antioch by the lake because it's just so darn affordable! (we're from NY, so we're continuously amazed at what you can get for the money here).
EITHER WAY. Good luck to you! A shorter commute, whether you're in Nashville proper or Antioch, is going to be awesome.
Now that I see this, disregard what I said before! Congratulations and enjoy the lake (i'm sure you'll get it!).
