What are they into? What price range are you looking for?
My parents are getting gift certificates to their favorite restaurants. We got my FIL a special kind of cofffee he likes.
I dunno... they are both workaholics. My dad is a contractor, so he doesn't need any nice clothes (ties, dress shirts, etc). And the only thing he really likes to do is golf... but EVERYONE gets him golf stuff. Or philadelphia eagles paraphernalia.... but i dont want to get him something just to get him something.
FIL also doesn't really need anything. He's big into gadgets and tools, but if there was anything that he wanted, he would have bought it for himself already... he's one of those...
Money is tight this year, so I don't want to do anything too extravagant. Probably around $50 for each gift.
My dad was easy because he gave me a list
. We are doing "needs" vs "wants" this Christmas...although I put some "wants" in there, too

FIL works outside quite a bit, he is the maintenance director at an apartment complex. We got him some really warm gloves with liners that have a pocket for those handwarmer things and a fleece hat type thing that covers his neck and has a hole for his face. Is there anything similar to that you could get for your dad? Something he could use for work? I was just looking at the Old Navy Web site today and they had fleece-lined jeans on sale for $25 or so, would be a great gift if he works outside where it is cold.
As for your FIL...DH and I are like that so we are hard to buy for, too! Does he like to read or any food in particular? You could put together a basket of his favorite snacks or something? Or a "Saturday afternoon kit" with books he would like and some snacks? Or a movie? A gift card to a store you know he likes might seem impersonal, but if he is one to go get whatever he wants when he wants it he would definitely appreciate it.

Does FIL have a particular place he buys his gadgets? Maybe a gift certificate to there?
And does your Dad drink coffee? Workaholics and Caffeine usually go together. Maybe some special blue mountain or kona...

I will talk to DH about where FIL buys his gadgets. Maybe that would be a good idea.
And my dad, since he is a contractor, he doesn't drink a lot of coffee. It makes him have to pee and it's a PITA when he's at job sites lol. He's a lost cause.
I just leave FILs gift up to DH, but his birthday is 5 days after christmas, so I picked up a cheap Minnesota Twins shirt for him, and I'll see if DH wants to get him anything else.
For my dad, 3 years ago I got him a huge nascar book, because he is a racing fan, and last year I got my parents something together, and this year I got an ISU windbreaker for him, still working on my Mom's gift...
I don't have a FIL so I can't help you there but for my dad I got a handy dandy measuring tape I saw on TV. It has a light and a place to hold a pencil so it draws the line as you pull it. I also got him a 3 pack of insulated work gloves from Costco. The Mr. got him a subscription to a magazine he likes. He's been doing that for him for a couple years now and my dad really likes it because it's not really something he would buy for himself but something he enjoys having.
Do you mind if I ask where you got this? It sounds like something DH might like, he is always building something or working on some project or another.
