Kitchen and Bath covered in water (vent)

Sooooo... we live in a brownstone owned by friends of K's family. The hot water heater that serves our the apartments in the building (there's only 2 apartments) is located in a closet in our kitchen. That usually is not a problem...until it started to leak last night... BADLY! My entire kitchen and most of my bath is covered in water (ok, maybe not covered but it's REALLY bad). Sears came out and said a new one needs to be installed (duh!!!!) but that won't happen until tomorrow. In the meantime the repair guy tried to a least turn off the water so that we won't drown but... the way the unit is set up you have to turn off the main water valve outside. I have NO clue where that is. Asked my landlord and she doesn't either!!! The repair guy says even if he found the valve he's not allowed to touch it!WTF! So my kitchen and bath are TOTALLY unuseable until tomorrow!!!! OVER IT!Angry

Re: Kitchen and Bath covered in water (vent)

  • UGH!  What a pain!  I hate when house stuff goes poorly. Our furnace bailed on us last week - ugh!  Hang in there....is it still leaking?  Can you siphon the water into something else so it stops?  Use a de-humidifier?  Wet/dry vac?  How deep is it?

  • Oh man....Hope it gets resolved quickly!

  • it's about a half inch deep! A different repair guy (who knows where the main valve is) coming to turn the water off. Hopefully we can get a wet vac in here before the day is over...
  • UGH! That is awful.

Your landlord should really know how to handle these kinds of emergencies! Do you have a property management company you could call or a higher-up? Will they let you call in a professional plumber at least?

You can't live like that for a whole day, all the sitting water could leak or start to mold. So sorry, what a hideous Monday ((HUGS))

  • What an awful way to start your week! I hope the water is turned off and pumped out soon.  It really is an emergency and your landlord needs to get someone there ASAP to pump out the standing water.  You shouldn't be staying there especially if there is any danger of the water making it to outlets, cords, etc.

  • They sent someone to my rescue!!!!!!! Water is turned off and being pumped as I type this!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Going to stay at K's mom's tonight (so that I can take a shower). The new hot water heater will be here in the morning!  Thank heaven!!!!
  • what a nightmare!! but i'm glad its in the process of repair!
