Okay, so I will preface this by saying that I am not a runner and never have been... but I am considering trying the c25k program.  However, I am wondering if it has to be done outdoors or can it be done indoor on an elliptical or treadmill?  I would prefer to run outdoors but the weather in KC is super cold right now (less than 20 degrees) and ice and snow over the next couple of months are inevitable. 
TTC since August 2008 4 cycles Femara = BFN Dx PCOS February 2010, 1000 mg Metformin XR IUI #1: Dexamethasone + Femara + Ovidrel + Progesterone = BFN IUI #2: Dexamethasone + Femara + Ovidrel + Progesterone = BFP! Our son arrived January 17, 2011!

  • I just started this program last week.  I'm training to do a half marathon in April, and I'm certainly not a runner either.

    I've done a couple of days (when it's been cold here) inside on the treadmill.  And then I've done a couple of days outside when it's been nice.  I think as long as you are up running, exercising, etc. it doesn't matter where you do the training. 

    Now once I get closer to my race, I'll probably do more outside training just to prepare for running on the street.

  • I run outdoors, but you could do it on a treadmill too.  I listen to the Podrunner Intervals podcast (highly recommend - you can download it for free) and they say something about "if you're running on a treadmill .... " but I always tune out to what they're saying since I'm not :)  The only thing I think would be kind of annoying is at the beginning of the program, you're doing more intervals/session, therefore you'll have to change the speed on your treadmill a lot.  Although, that's probably preferable to freezing to death :)
  • You can definitely do it on the treadmill, but if you plan on doing any actual 5K races, I'd get some time in outside before the race. No amount of changing inclines on the treadmill can prepare you for running outside with the changes in slope, uneven pavement, and simply the act of running on pavement, which is a lot harder on your body than the treadmill.

    But for a start, just to get moving, definitely go for the treadmill! Good luck!

  • oh Kansas City, I don't miss the cold but I do miss those Plaza lights :)

    I did the whole 9 weeks of C25K inside on the treadmill, I actually liked that I could adjust the intervals really easily on the treadmill at first.  The program will give you just long enough to where it will start to warm up in KC and then you can get a few runs in outside and run a 5k race. 

    I, like many other people was not a runner either but I like to tell my inspiration story.  When I was younger I once FAKED passing out in gym to get out of running, then I was a smoker for 10 years.  I quit smoking, then got engaged.  I wanted to get in shape for the wedding and started the C25K.  I stuck with it and ran my first 5k in Sept 08, then I joined a running club and still stuck with it after the wedding and I just did my first half marathon on Sunday.  I am telling you ladies, if I can do it, ANYONE can do it.  I don't LOVE running and I don't LOVE getting up at 5am to go run BUT it is so rewarding and I feel such a sense of accomplishment so it is worth it!!!
