Recommend your CSA

I'd prefer it to be pretty easy to get to in Hillsboro or Beaverton, if possible.  Or if they'll deliver to Intel (Ronler) that'd be even better!  : )

  • Sorry!  Community Supported Agriculture.  They're farms that you buy in to.  People there grow fresh fruits, veggies and sometimes provide things like fresh eggs, honey, and meat.  But you get a portion of the harvest, usually weekly or every other week.  It's just a good way to support local growers while getting a variety of fresh food to cook with.  : )
  • Gotcha.  I didn't know what CSA stood for.

We are buying into Cornell Farms.  It's $215-ish for 18 weeks - June thru Oct for a box that generously feeds 2-3 people.

We used to use SPUD and liked them.

And that's a REALLY good deal!!! I might have to bug DH about that one...that is one I think I might be able to afford right now!

Is this their website? I'm trying to track this place down- what a steal! We did do Organics To You last year, worked out pretty well.

I was wondering the same thing, because I didn't see a place to sign up for their food.  But that is an amazing price!

No, its yourcsa.com and you can sign up online. I grabbed my paperwork and it's $236 for a half-share (2-3 ppl) $225 cash/$236 credit.  And that's for 18 weeks mid-June through October.

They're at 150th and Cornell, and you have to pick up your box every week.  But DH and I think it's well worth it.  And since we can walk there, it's a great deal for us!

  • Jeni, what a great idea! $12 a week is not that much and it's nice that you have a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables and they give you recipes too. I always have trouble buying enough fresh vegetables bc I don't know what to cook with them and the fact that it's local and organic is really great too. I could easily stop by there from work too. Do you know if their farm store is open in the winter months too? I'd just like to see it before signing up.

Right now they have Christmas trees, fresh centerpieces and wreaths, but not sure if they have actual food right now.  But you can at least go in and meet them, they are all super nice and helpful.

You can also pick up the paperwork to join, and a list of what fruits/veggies they had each week last year so you can get an idea of what to expect.  They are right across from Kaady Car Wash on 150th and Cornell - between the Murray and Bethany exits off 26.

This summer I bought all my cucumbers for my pickles, fresh dill (he pulled it right out of the ground for me!), pears, onions and some other great things.  DH and I have always been impressed with them.

  • Thanks for the info. They did have some great info on their website about what they usually have in their weekly boxes. I will probably wait to sign up though, bc I'd really like DH to get a job first.

Oh, and his parents live in Bend and last year we purchased half a cow with them together from a local farm / meat packing co. They packed everything up and we had steak, stew meat, ground beef and such for about $2.50/lb. The meat was of such great quality! And very affordable too. It definitely helps to have a big freezer though.

I'd totally be interested in doing that! DH needs to get a job first, and we'd need to figure out the freezer situation (I guess we could only have meat in the freezer) but I'd love to do a meat CSA! I'll have to look into that!

If you're seriously looking into it...post on CL and Freecycle that you're looking for a freezer...we were able to score one off of CL for FREE :) Our dogs eat raw so we needed something to store all their food. Worked out great :)

  • My cousin-in-law's GF's family owns French Prairie Gardens and I know they do CSA. It's sorta spendy, but they have great produce

Great idea, but we have NO extra room for one! :( No garage and no storage at the new place...but will certainly do that for the next place we live at!
