Oh, and doggy daycare? : )

The two that are close to us are:

A Dog Gone Good Place

and

Schroder's Den

Does anyone know anything about either of them?  Are there any other recs that are pretty close to either of those?  The days we plan to use daycare for Nandi are days that I can't spend 30 minutes driving to, so it needs to be really close to Tanasbourne or Ronler Acres so either Jeff or I can drop her off on our way to school/work.

Thanks!  : )

Re: Oh, and doggy daycare? : )

  • We went to the puppy socialization group on Sundays with Finley last year.  Their daycare area is pretty smallm though.  But they were VERY nice, and seem to run a pretty good business and know what they are doing with the dogs.

I don't know anything about A Dog Gone Good Place, but I can ask tomorrow when I'm at Virginia Woof.  The trainers there seem to know a lot about the other daycares.

  • Does Finley have a website?  I tried googling but came up with a funeral home.  : )

And yes, if you don't mind asking at Virgina Woof I'd really appreciate it.  Virginia Woof looks amazing (I googled it after hearing you talk about it at the GTG); I wish that they were open earlier so we could take Nandi there!

  • I took Xander to A Dog Gone Good Place and wasn't impressed.  We've been taking him to PetSmart on 185th and Walker road ever since.  He LOVES it there.  You can drop off as early as 7am and pick up as late as 9pm but the actual "day care" hours are 9am-5pm.  When you drop them off they'll put them in their own private "suite" until 9am and then they get playtime from 9am to noon, naptime from noon-1 and then playtime from 1 to 5pm.  From there, they go back into their suite to relax until you pick them up.  If you bring food, they'll feed them breakfast and/or lunch and/or dinner.  I usually take breakfast with us because he gets car sick and if he's going to be there past 7 then I take dinner and have them feed him at 6.  He also gets a PawGress report each time he goes which is fun for us :)  oh and daycare is only $21/day :)

But after talking to Jeni @ the GTG I am going to check out Virginia Woof since it's 5 blocks from my office and would be convenient.

  • Thanks for posting this thread! This was yet another thing I was going to ask for recs for!

And honestly...we LOVED our old Petsmarts Pethotel in San Diego. They had 2 there, and one I wasn't thrilled on, but it was clean and I did like it better than several other places I checked out in San Diego (and I check them out pretty well I think). They then opened up another Petsmart on the other side of San Diego, close to our house that we LOVED! The whole staff new Callie (she's hard to forgot, actually which is good and bad!) and they were very consistent no matter who checked her in, etc. We even "snuck up" on her a few times when she was in daycare, since you can see from the store, and Callie was either A.playing hard or B. passed our from exhaustion. She loved it there, and we were happy they took good care of her. They'd call us with any issues, and even knew to give her an extra hour or two of rest if she was in daycare all day b/c she has bad hips. But...I could have liked it because of that one place. Hours are nice, too.

I will definately check out a few of the other places you girls mentioned though!

Careful-some of these places have breed restrictions. I remember one place wouldn't take Leo-so that one prob wont take a Pittie either. :( . From what I hear its mostly the customers who freak out about leaving their dog in daycare with another 'dangerous' dog. Make sure to call ahead and talk to someone who knows the breed/clientele.

Confession: I have been *that* mom before, I admit. Not with a breed though-just alpha male dogs. I watched on camera as another dog rolled Leo when he was a teenager and heard my baby yelp through the wall. I FREAKED.OUT on that place and told them they could call that dogs mom and have her pick him up, or I would never come back and I'd tell all my friends.  Embarrassed

    I'm not proud of that...

  • Oh, I know people probably won't take Nan because she's an Am Staff. : (  I figured I would start with places that people think are OK and then expand the search if necessary.

Oh no, I didn't even think of that! I guess that would make it more difficult (due to breed restrictions). :( Sorry about that!

  • I've personally worked at 2 dog daycares near Tigard and like to look at other ones.

Club K-9 is great! they have a location in Tigard and one in North Portland. www.clubk-9.com I'm not sure what you're close to.  They have a nap time and keep the place very clean.  They also do boarding in really nice suites.

Virginia Woof is nice, they have a great program but I cant say much about staff there since i only interviewed there.

Shroeder's den (I wish they had a name i could actually spell) is a place my mom was able to do a work study there (adult program) and she was not impressed. The floors were very dirty and the staff seemed disjointed (not great communication between the front and back).  Its possible its changed since.

I currently work at Doggone Fun! in Tualatin.  They describe themselves as very simple. no webcam, no little dog room.  They do a lot of rotating of dogs during the day to make sure everyone gets along well.

I've dealt with some of you :-P *that* client.  One reason why I dont like web cams... things seem different on camera than in person.

  • Oh breed restrictions: Some insurance companies won't let the dog daycare take on what ever breeds.  Many clients do have issues with "dangerous breeds".  Club K-9's policy was no pit or pit mixes.  Every so often a "lab mix" was allowed but they were taken case by case.  I know most daycares are the same way in portland.

In Newport there is a daycare with no breed restrictions. :-) its a very nice daycare that I highly recomend if you're ever in town. They take tourist dogs, but call ahead of time and make sure you've got your shot records with you.  www.dogportdaycare.com

Nope!   Because it doesn't matter what kind of dog is picking on my Nan Pan.  If they hurt her little feelings and make her ears sad, I'll be the sterotyped pit going after them.  Wink

Oh no!  I meant Finley (my dog) went to Schroeder's Den for socialization class last year.  :)

And yes, VW is amazing!  I'll talk to the folks there tomorrow and get back to you.

I forgot about Club K-9.  Last winter we boarded Blue Bear there and he loved it, and we were very impressed with the cleanliness, and their play area is huge.

  • Just chiming in, although my opinion might not be applicable since a) I'm willing to drive further our and b) most dog places won't accept my crazy Scotti  (completely insecure alpha male, if that can exist and hates other dogs). I have to do private play for my kids.

I've had a good experience w/ Stay Pet Hotel. They recently renovated, now accommodating more dogs (which could be a good or bad thing).  They've worked with my dogs a lot in the past year and a half. The con for me is they like to reiterate how "crazy" Scotti is. Ok, i get it. For how much I pay you and you chose to care for him, you could just deny me, stop telling me how bad my dog is. I know. I'm working on it.

We've been using Burley's Dog Ranch a lot lately. Love the place and love Wendy and her family. Might be a good place if your dog is high energy and suffers from breed discrimination. Here's my review of Burley's.

  • Ooooh, that makes a lot more sense Jeni.  : )

And of course you can chime in bula!  If we have to drive, we have to drive.  I'm on my way to the airport to pick up in the inlaws, but we got our paperwork last night in the mail to make Nandi ours.  Now that we have her records we can find one that will work for her.

  • I've had no problems taking my pittie to The Dog Park, but it's on SE 17th and Umatilla in Sellwood, so nowhere close to you at all.  I highly reccomend them, they are awesome, and have several pits there, they judge on the Dog, not the Breed.  We have left our dogs there up to 2 weeks at a time and have had great experiences.  Their doggy daycare area is nice and big, and it's all air conditioned and heated, so it stays comfortable for the dogs.

    Good luck!

This surprises me a little; we left our dog (one of the most neurotic dogs on Earth, I'm positive) at Stay for a week in October, and they were great about him.  We did warn them ahead of time that he probably wasn't cut out for hanging with other dogs, but he got plenty of one-on-one with staff and they didn't say anything about him being a pill.

Stay isn't conveniently located to much of anything, but we'll definitely take him back there when we need to leave him.
