Hi ladies - my DH seems to think that it's likely he's going to be moved to the Vestal area soon for work. I'm not sure why he thinks this or if it's true...he just says he has a feeling. So, I'm finally learning my way around ROC and it looks like we may move again in the near future. Any input on the area would be great. He said he heard that some people at the club there live in PA and commute because it's cheaper...is that a far drive though??? Thanks for the input.
Re: Vestal area
My DH used to live in Vestal when he went to SUNY Binghamton. That was back in 1998 (wow.. I feel old!). There was plenty to do, seemed like a pretty average upstate sort of city to me (being from Long Island), and it is close to SUNY (obviously). We actually had fun, although I'm sure it has changed a whole lot in 10 years (for the better, i'm sure). I remember going to movies, cafes downtown, hiking on trails, checking out some good restaurants, that kind of thing.
Where were you from before ROC?

Hello! I live near Vestal/Binghamton! Vestal is actually pretty booming for our area. It's where a lot of shops and restaurants are. Plus you have Binghamton University (formerally SUNY Binghamton). Like Artic said, there is lots to do...movie theaters, sporting events, BU has hiking trails and the Anderson Center in which they hold plays/shows/concerts. It's a pretty busy place!
If you move here you already have at least 4 friends here! Me, Astrellyne, lyse#'s, and veryluckyone live in the area!
I grew up in the Binghamton area (which I include Vestal, endicott, endwell, johnson city (is it stil a city?) all in)...
The PP are right- vestal has the university, shops, movie theaters, etc- its enough to keep you sane.
About the living in PA- certain outling areas butt right up to PA and you could technically "commute" however, the cost of living, buying a house etc in that area is actually pretty reasonable - so you should be able to find something locally within the 4 or 5 towns that make up the area...
are you guys looking at school districts or anything like that?
OooooOOOOOoooooooh! VESTAL!!!!!!!!!! Haha. Coming from Binghamton, it was the point of view that Vestal is where the $$ is at, so the neighborhoods are nice!!!!!!!
If you DO consider buying, Apalachian/Owego is sooo lovely. You can go to Owego for the small town feel or head to Binghamton for....hockey?
I work at one of the hospitals. A coworker drives an hour to and from work because she lives in PA, but there are plenty of places closer to the border (you just head down 81 like 10 minutes). It think when you consider $ for gas, it might make more financial sense to find a home in NY and then your DH doesn't have to worry about filing taxes in two states. I hated that about living in PA.
