I asked for a digital camera. any suggestions?

I work in tv but I funny enough I'm not into cameras/camcorders...however I asked for a new camera for Christmas. My coworker let me tinker with his Panasonic Lumix, it was very nice but I don't know what I want until I own it and notice all the things that are wrong with it.

Our consumer reporter likes Lumix and Canon Powershot. Any thoughts?

Re: I asked for a digital camera. any suggestions?

  • Wait, you asked for a camera, but you're looking for suggestions?  If you asked, wouldn't it be on someone else to get you the camera?

I'm also confused by you saying "I don't know what I want until I own it..."

That being said, the user interface is a big part of the camera experience.  If you can't use it easily, you won't like the camera.

Besides that, both the Panasonic and the Canon are good cameras with good optics, and will provide good pictures.  The user experience is the biggest variable between them.  That's all on you and your preferences.

  • Yes, i asked for a camera AND I'm asking for suggestions. My husband wanted to know if I had a camera in mind.
  • You can always go to a shop and play with a few on display, see what you like that way.

  • A camera is typically no small purchase, so I don't understand why you would ask for a camera without having any idea what camera - or even what brand of camera - you would want.

But like PP and I have said, you really just need to go play with the cameras to get a feel for them.  Picture quality is important, but so is the UI.  If you can't even figure out how to take a picture or change the settings, the camera will be worthless to you.

  • What's the deal? I just wanted to know what kind of camera people used. No need for the tone.
  • No one is giving you any "tone." And, you didn't ask "what camera do you use" you asked for "suggestions". Those are two different monsters.

The deal is this, we are confused by your "I don't know what I like till I own it" statement but are still giving you good advice. The only good way to figure out what camera is best for you is to go TRY them. This is the same with most electronics.

So, my suggestion is to go to a shop and TRY out a few, play with them, figure out how they work.

  • I like the Sony cameras. I had a Canon and I didn't like it. I also had a Casio and that broke too easily and too many times .

  • DH and I have always had canon point-and-shoot cameras and we really enjoy them...you can go on cnet.com or canon's website and compare different models (if you want something waterproof, or whatever, that's the way to narrow your choices) :)
  • I LOVE my Canon Powershot. Can't rave about it enough. Have had it for a couple years now, and have no complaints. Love all the shooting options (night, beach, foliage etc...).

I use a Casio Exilim S770. It's 7mp. If I could have, I'd gotten more mp for those closeups and zooming in to crop the pic.

You need to consider what you are using the camera for and how it would work in your lifestyle. The Exilim is a 'point and shoot'.. has auto focus. Do you want one that focuses for you or do you want to tinker with that yourself? Some cameras have a dual mode to where it will auto focus yet can be set so that you do the focus.

How slim or bulky do you want? My kid is apprenticed for pro photography and she has a Nikon SLR. Takes fantastic pics, but would be way too bulky for the situations I usually am in. I need something that I can slip in/out of pocket fast, lightweight.

Best bet is to go to a couple camera depts and ask all kinds of questions

.Remember this statement "There is no such thing as a dumb question!"

Look at both the point/shoot models and the SLR's. Handle them, see what is comfy to hands and what bells/whistles you know you want. This also allows you to cross off the ones who are too intimidating to use.

What price range are you looking at? Just go play in the cameras so you have a better idea and will be happy with your gift!!

Edit.. some cameras will even do video. Mine does, it isn't real high quality, but it does well for what I want.

Edit2- when looking at the zoom,, I'd want as much "Optical zoom" as I could. So if camera A has 4x optical/3x digital zoom, camera B has 3x optical/4x digital zoom,, Camera A would win if all else was the same on both cameras
