Favorite Diner Type Restaurant

Brad and I were watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network last night. He brought up a great point. Living in Orlando we have a lot of great places to eat (most are chains or high-end), but also a lot of bombs (because restaurants don't have to make an impression on the people that don't live locally).

Where we live, right next to Disney, we don't have any real mom and pop type restaurants - like the ones they visit on the show. Well, maybe we do but we don't know about them. We don't get around CF too often, but we would travel if there are some around. Are there any out there?

Re: Favorite Diner Type Restaurant

  • I love this idea - hopefully you'll get lots of diners! Coming from NJ, I'm used to having diners alllllllllllll over the place. Haven't seen one down here yet! I miss them!

  • Not in Orlando, but there is a "mom and pop" diner called Harolds that we like to go to for breakfast.  We also like Harbor City Diner for their hamburgers.

I'm curious to see what places are recommended in Orlando (other than the tourist stuff)

  • Our favorite restaurant...Wing Shack on South OBT near Hunter's Creek...

  • The Ravenous Pig, Enzian (I know it is a movie theatre, but you can eat dinner there too -- and that is "different)

What else, Urban Flats, Dexters (although now there is more than one) as well Po Boys BBQ. (I know the owners -- and they have multiple resturants now, but they really are Mom and Pop)

I know there are more, but I tend to be lazy and eat at chains. I would love to know more local places. I remember growing up and eating at lots of places on park Ave, but ost of those restaurants are gone or are just crappy now.

  • Oh, I guess I should say these aren't "dives" . . . but they are locally owned. I wasn't going for things that you might see on that show -- but more of local restaurants.
  • Now you ahve me thinking. Everybody should travel and go to The Old Spanish Suar Mill. (inside DeLeon Spring State Park)

Totally unique place -- make you own pancakes . . . YUMMY!!

    Okay, I leave y'all alone . . . I can't sleep, so I am up nesting!

  • The Daybreak Diner on Conway & Crystal Lake or Uncle Henrys Country Kitchen on Orange Ave between Hoffner and Michigan.  Both are good for breakfast or lunch.
  • I love Yellow Dog Eats near Gotha!! Great food, eclectic atmosphere.  I never feel like I'm in Orlando when I'm eating there!
    Hawaii
  • Tasty Thai off Curry Ford and Conway.  Looks are VERY deceiving on the outside but, it has awesome Thai food.  Been going there for at least 10 years now:)

  • I must agree with Yellow Dog Eats. ?They have the BEST sandwiches. ?

There is a Thai place on 50 in Ocoee across from West Oaks mall called Soong Thai. ?It is absolutely the best Thai ever. ?I am from DC and there are a TON of ethnic restaurants up there so it's hard for me to find good ethnic food down here. ?I can say that this Thai is better than any of the restaurants in DC. ?It really is the best!!! ?Must try if you like Thai food.

There is a hole in the wall called Sloppy Taco Palace in the JBs shopping center at the corner of Kirkman and Conroy near Metrowest. ?We just recently stumbled upon this place and it's amazing. ?They have sloppy tacos and they are just that. ?Messy and delicious. ?Another must try.

Last but not least in Clermont on 50 in the Publix shopping plaza is a place called Gekko Sushi. ?It has the best sushi that I have found in all of Orlando. ?It is always fresh and done right.

There are some other places but those are the best that I could think of right now.?

  • For bfast, we like Le Peep in Metro on Conroy and Kirkman. And now living in Oviedo, we go to the Townhouse Inn. College Park has a good bfast place, Christo's I think it is. And for burgers and beers we go to Johnny's Fillin' Station on Ferncreek or Jax on Edgewater for beers and pizzas or wraps. Blackhammock Fish Camp in Oviedo is cool. And driving out toward Cocoa on 520 is Lone Cabbage. Both of those places are def dives, kinda anyone-friendly biker bars, but good food and usually fun live music on weekends.

For true local diners and dives, there's probably more offerings around downtown Orlando...I used to check Orlando Weekly's website to find new places to go. Even living here for most of my life, there are still so many places I have never heard of or tried. And it's fun to get out and drive on a little adventure that ends w/ good food!

I love Uncle Henry's... we try to go there once a month!
