Flat Irons

Hello:)

I need a flat iron.  Anyone have any recommendations for one and hopefully under a 100 dollars.  I know the Chi is suppose to be really good, but was hoping there is a cheaper brand that works just as good.

Thanks!

Re: Flat Irons

  • I have a Chi and love it! I don't think it was much more than $100, but I received it as a gift. My advice is to go to Ulta and check out what they have. That's what my stylist recommended as well. I personally believe that you get what you pay for with flat irons and the cheaper ones (I'm talking $30 from Target) don't do as good a job and will fry your hair.
  • I used a Chi for a while, and it worked great but then suddenly stopped working (as did those of a few friends of mine).  I then was turned onto Sedu.  When I purchased mine the only place I could find it was online, and it works so great.  It's right around $100, but worth it if you use flat irons regularly.  The site I got it from often has free gifts with purchase, as well.

  • Sorry I have to recommend the Chi.    I've had CHEAP cheap model (i.e. $10 conair) and expensive cheap models (i.e. $40) and was blown away the first time I tried a chi.     If you watch on amazon and overstock and other places you might find it for a little less than $100, but that is about the going price.

  • I have also been doing research on getting a new flat iron. I've been using a cheapy forever and its dying on me.

I've been doing a lot of research and it seems like Sedu is the brand that former Chi users go to when their Chi breaks. I can't remember who said they had a Sedu, but how long have you had it? You seem to prefer it to the Chi. Are there reasons aside from hoping it will last longer? Thanks :D

  • As a black woman with frizzy hair, I've owned just about every flat iron there is. I really liked my CHI but it broke so now I'm using an iron by FHI which is good but not as good as the CHI.

I think I'm going to try the Sedu next since some of my friends have them and say they love it.

Go to www.folica.com. They have great reviews of flat irons from consumers. It's gonna be hard to find a really good one under $100 but there are some out there.

  • Thanks so much ladies!  I was wondering about the cheap ones.  Looks like I will be spending a bit more money, but if it works then I am all for it:)  Thanks for the website too!
  • I am a HUGE Sedu fan! I used to swear by CHI but then it broke within a year. Other nesties suggested a Sedu and I haven't looked back since!

I was going to get it at folica.com but Ulta had a special so I got it from there.

  • Stumpy, how long have you had your Sedu?
  • I got my friend a CHI from Amazon for Christmas (based on a rec from another friend) and I think I only paid like $70 for it.  I'll see if I can find the same one for you.  Both of my friends LOVE it!

  • I would guess over a year.

It is funny because my CHI broke. I got a Sedu and then someone gave me a new CHI -- I actually sold AliciaY my CHI. (My sister still swears by her CHI that I got her over two years ago)

Again, I have used both . . . and I love the Sedu.

  • Awesome stumpy, thanks for answering. I've been doing a lot of research. I'm pretty cheap so I want to make sure that I get the best hair straightener if I'm going to spend 70-100 dollars! I've read a lot of reports of Chi's pooping out after about a year.
  • Looking back, I think I got my Sedu the first week of August last year - so just about one year ago.  It seems to flatten even better than he CHI.  Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind the CHI, but within a few months it became very tempermental and then eventually stopped working.  The same thing happened to some friends, one of which referred me to the Sedu. I bought mine on foilca.com and agree that they have great reviews to consider as you do some research.  Best of luck!
  • I'm a loyal Chi user, and I think it's well worth the money.  I've tried the cheaper flat irons too, and they don't even remotely compare.  I haven't had any problems with my Chi either (it's been working great for like 7 years now!).  Maybe I just got lucky though lol.

  • I have very thick, curly hair and a lot of it! I've used the Chi since 2003 and can't live without it. I bought one for my sister last year at Bed Bath & Beyond and used one of their 20%off coupons, so you may want to check there. Not sure what they retail for these days.
