Facebook advice please

I taught middle school last year and three of my really sweet girls just sent me friend requests on Facebook. I'm not planning on accepting, but I feel bad just ignoring them. I got laid off and they didn't know I wouldn't be back, so to them I just kind of disappeared. I don't want them to think I'm a grinch because there's no other way for them to contact me.

Should I send them a message saying I just use Facebook for family, just ignore them because really it won't be a big deal to them, or something else?

Re: Facebook advice please

  • I would ignore but I'm not a teacher so I don't know how that dynamic works.Maybe Y_L or APK will have better insight.

IMO It won't hurt to send them a message explaining that you use Facebook only for family. Totally a legit reason and they should understand. I definitely wouldn't add them.

You can add me though :) Cool

  • I would ignore them.  Your students are like my clients, I just don't think we should mix with them on social networks.
  • I totally would never add them, I think it's weird to have students (even ex students) as friends.

I have a few people that are kind of professionally related as friends on FB.  It's the reason that I am not totally candid on there.

  • Ya, there are certain people I've ignored because of that.

  • I created a separate fb that I use to friend students with, and I ONLY friend students who have graduated.

Sometimes students who are no longer in my class, but are still at my school, try to add me, and I just message them back and tell them to wait until they graduate to add me.

You might just want to message them back and let them know that you don't friend former students. I know I would feel bad ignoring them.

FBs new privacy settings make it easier to find people, so you might get more of these.

  • If you add them, you can customize your settings for them to block status updates, pictures, etc.
  • Don't add them, sounds like a slippery slope.

  • you could PM them with your email address and stay connected that way?  unless you don't want to do that either, which I would understand.
