What to get someone who doesn't like gifts?

Seriously, she doesn't like gifts and is impossible to shop for.  My SIL is very practical and doesn't really care about gifts.  She buys what she needs and that's that.

She likes to travel and go out to eat, but we aren't allowed to give gift cards in our family gift exchange.  She also likes to go to the theater.

She asked my parents for a gift card to Macys for work clothes, but my DH doesn't want to give her clothes (he is the one that got her in the exchange). She also plays tennis, but has everything she needs for it.

I have NO clue what we should get her. She isn't a girly girl so she isn't someone that would appreciate anything like perfume, spa related stuff, or anything like that.

Our limit is $50.

HELP!  :)

Re: What to get someone who doesn't like gifts?

  • How come you can't give gift cards? That's kind of silly...I never know what to get both my BILs, so I get them Amex gift cards (that way they're not limited to one retailer).

Is there another interest, hobby or decorating style she's into? I'm not a girly-girl either and I, too, don't like getting a ton of gifts (b/c it turns into clutter), so I can relate with her on all those points. But even tom-boys like myself loves something (for me: Fiestaware, Beatles and pedals or accessories for my guitar).

With all that aside, she did tell your DH what she needs, so why not just give her the Macy's gift card? Clothes can be a lovely, thoughtful gift.

  • When I am absolutely stumped as to what to get someone, I usually end up at Pier One or Bed Bath and Beyond and just get them something nice for their house - like a set of wine glasses, a table centerpiece and linens, a cool gadget for their kitchen or a few of those reed oil diffusers. It would be easy to make a little basket of stuff like that.

OR.. you could just get clothes and let her keep the receipt. If she doesn't like it, she can just return it and get herself what she really wants.

  • What about a nice purse or wallet?  If she is getting new work clothes then she might like some new accessories.

  • Does she like to drink? Is she a coffee lover? Get her a basket filled with things like that

Or go to a Cracker Barrel and make a basket of old fashion foods and candies. Or a Breakfast basket.

Those are things that I like to get ppl if they are like my FIL or in this case your SIL that just go out and get whatever they want and are picky.

  • I like the basket idea.  I'd get her a good cookbook (Pioneer Woman's is awesome).  Then, pick out your favorite recipe, and buy the ingredients for it... and place it all in the basket (minus the parishable goods).  LOL  And add maybe a DVD and some popcorn and candy for an evening date at home.

  • If she likes to travel then why not get her a traveling suitcase. One just for her, fill it with traveling essentials like a mini flat iron (19.99). shampoo, moisterizer, etc. It's another take on a gift basket.
  • Thats for all the suggestions, ladies!

The reason for no gift cards is so we are creative and don't go for something easy and thoughtless - but she is so hard!

She has everything she needs (like for traveling and tennis) and isn't someone that likes decor and extra stuff for the house.  She is seriously the most difficult person to shop for ever!

She doesn't cook really, so getting a cookbook and stuff is hard.

I may be able to give her a food basket though, she does eat lol.

I actually had another idea though tonight.  I got my brother in the exchange, her husband, so I think we might them tickets to a Broadway show that is coming down here. Hopefully the tickets won't be more than $50 each!

  • Try looking into the Adrienne Arsht Center. I know they have 101 Dalmatians starting Dec. 30th. Good luck Michi!
