Oops...

So I'm new at this wife stuff.  I've only done my own laundry and I didn't really have a formula to do it.  I just separated the darks, lights, and put them in the washer.

Well I got in big trouble last night with my hubby because I totally ruined his $100+ Tommy Bahama shirt because I put it in the washer and it shrunk and lost its color.  Oops...

That wouldn't be that bad if I hadn't already gradually ruined  a whole bunch of his favorite clothes due to my bad laundry habits of not paying attention to stuff in the pockets, not changing the temp, putting a red shirt with a white shirt, etc.

I feel really bad.  I really need to start paying attention and improving my laundry routine.  But hey I told the hubby, I'm new at this give me a break. Ouch!

Re: Oops...

  • I would feel bad too - but on the other hand, he could always do his own laundry!

When my husband and I first moved in together he was so proud of himself that he did the laundry.  He unfortunately washed some silk sweaters which were of course totally ruined.  Since then he hasn't done any of my laundry (by my request!).

  • Well since I work from home I do the laundry mostly.  He helps me a lot with house stuff though.

But yeah he pretty much banned me from doing his laundry anymore.

  • Damn, that sucks. It was probably a silk blend or something, huh? Don't feel too bad, it happens to the best of us.

A few tips to help, wash everything in cold. It's better for the environment, there's no real need for the higher temp, and you reduce shrinking risks.

Shout makes these color catchers. They look like dryer sheets, but you put them in the washer to catch any colors that run so it doesn't get on other clothes. I don't use them on every wash, just if something looks like it might make trouble!

And for both of you, anything that can't be put in the regular wash, make a pile or put a basket somewhere else for dry clean items. That way there's no mistaking things that can't go in the washer. We've all learned this the hard way. And like pp said, had a few nice sweaters turned into doll clothes.

I tell C to clean out his pockets every nite. Even bought a little basket for him to put the stuff in to remind him. But I still find at least one pen and a few receipts each week. Just safer to check...esp w/ the pens! Yikes! And I started washing his pants and jeans all together, no matter what color so in case something does slip thru it's chance of ruining a nice shirt or something is not as likely. Besides, the jeans are rougher in the wash on my more delicate things anyway.

It will get better. Laundry is such a chore anyway...and most things can be replaced :)

  • I'm one of those weird people who actually LIKES doing laundry.  I'd much rather do that than clean the floors or unload the dishwasher!!
  • It happens to all of us! My DH ruined my favorite wool sweater by putting it in the dryer, so it goes both ways :)

Thanks for the tips.  I told my hubby that the Tommy Bahama shirt was technically  his fault because he put it in the regular clothes pile instead of the dryclean one.  But that didn't make it any better:~

  • That sucks T! Yea....J tried banning me from doing the laundry cause he says I shrink his shirts but there is now way cause our drier is from 1971 (no seriously - it's so old!) and you have to put it in for like 45 minutes and still get damp stuff!

Tell him I said "Shit Happens! Do your own damn laundry!" lol...jk ... but that still sucks!

Happens to the best of us wifeys :(

  • Jenny, I mean at least I didn't burn the kitchen down.  And he hasn't had one burnt meal yet.

Oh well, it will be easier for me if he does his own laundry anyway.  Not that I think he'll stick to it.

  •  It could happen to anyone and I'd feel super bad too.  Embarrassed  No worries.
  • I hate laundry! It is by far my least favorite chore.
  • Just wondering...Did you guys not live together before you got married?  Brian and I have practically lived together since day 1 of dating, so we are pretty used to each other and the way we do things.  heehee (It's been like 8 1/2 years!)  But don't worry, it happens to the best of us.

I have one of those laundry sorters with 3 different sections and I have given Brian very specific instructions on how to put his clothes in it.  That may sound harsh to some, but I typically do the laundry and it makes it easier on me.  It works for us.  He will help with the laundry, but he always calls or texts me before each load to make sure he's putting everything on the right settings.  I don't make him do that...he just does.  Big Smile

I do have to say that I agree with you.  If your husband put it in the wrong pile, it's his fault, not yours!  Stick out tongue

I don't really mind it....but I do hate that my washer and dryer are in the garage. ?It's SOOOO hot out there.?

  • I hear ya!

And to add to the pp, if DH puts pants in the basket and he hasn't emptied the pockets, then he's responsible not me.  IF I pick them off the floor, or off the cedar chest, then I check the pockets.

IMO, when DH puts his stuff in the basket, he's saying "here ya go, it's all ready for you to wash".

DH will also do laundry, but he's a "everything goes in one load" kinda guy, so he's got specific instructions NOT to touch my clothes.

I'm the same way, LeeAnn. I wash all of his work clothes separately because they are gross, and we've had one too many pen incidents where one leaked all over a brand new pair of JD's JCrew khakis. I try to check everything now before I put it in the wash. It's annoying, but I guess those are the compromises of marriage!

  • Nope we didn't live together before marriage.  So all of it is very new to both of us.

I lived at home and he lived at home as well.  Which was good for both of us because we saved money and bought an condo together for investment.  (That we don't live in).

It may seem weird but it's totally not weird for a twenty-seven year old Cuban boy.  Cuban boys are treated like kings by their mommas and therefore they NEVER leave.  He didn't really do his own laundry before.  Its  kind of like that whole Italian mother thing in Italy. Cuban nesties back me up here because I know this seems wierd to people. lol

But in his defense, he isn't all macho about househould stuff.  When i go out for a day with the girls I always come home to find our whole bottom floor that includes the kitchen, living room, dining room, sweeped, mopped, vaccummed, dusted and spotless.  He likes doing cleaning when he's alone at the house.

  • I have never once done DH's laundry! (And we have been together a LONG time!) I separate a ton of stuff and always was in cold. Plus I rarely use the dryer . . . I grew up with just about everything I own being dried on a clothes rack. (Okay, I dry socks, towels, and underwear in the dryer.)

Anyway, I wouldn't dream of doing DH's laundry -- I know I would mess it up somehow.

I also never seem to load the dishwasher correctly -- it is kinda funny!

It's true ladies...Cuban boys tend to be Momma's Boys because the Momma's treat them like the best thing since Slice Bread. Believe me...I KNOW! :)

He won't stick to doing his own laundry T! LOL. I give it two weeks - TOPS! We have a hamper in the garage for dry cleaning only stuff. That way I can't mess up! Try putting one up somewhere - ours is in the garage so we remember to grab it on the way out the door to drop it off.

  • Oh - and we have another hamper right next to the regular one for dry cleaning. We have one of those three bag laundry sorters from Target (similar to this one: http://tinyurl.com/5venyw) which really helps. The dry cleaning one is a plastic basket so there's no mistaking which is which.
  • When my husband and I first moved in together he did some laundry and dried some stuff of mine he shouldn't have. My reaction was very pms-y. Lots of tears and how could yous. He has never attempted to do my laundry since! But in return I refuse to take out trash!
