I'm looking to get into photography...I love looking at photos and taking pictures, and just capturing moments and emotions on film (or SD card) forever...and I'm partly inspired by the outstanding work of my wedding photographer (Cristy Nielsen). I know some of you do some photography too. Can any of you recommend a good "starter" digital SLR camera? I'm looking for something $500 or less.
Re: Camera recommendations?
I think you read my mind....I was going to ask for recommendations!
Cmeon is our photo expert!!
We recently bought an Olympus E410. I love it!! There are pros and cons to all of them.
Canon and Sony are sold in most retail stores, so getting accessories for it would be easier. Not every place carries Olympus so you might be stuck buying stuff on-line.
I like the Olympus b/c right now, it's the only one that you can use the monitor/screen for live view. The other cameras, you need to look thru the eyepiece every time.
There's my 2 cents, but Chris (Cmeon) gave me good advice when I was shopping!
Let us know what you get!
Thanks for the rec on the Olympus! The live view feature sounds awesome...it'll make it a lot easier to get photos quickly...especially with a baby, those smiling moments can fade pretty fast! I don't mind buying online either (planning to buy the camera online). My MIL uses an Olympus E500 (the photos in my siggy were taken with this camera) so I know they make good stuff too.
I'll let you know what I get
We just bought one for taking pics of the baby. It's not fancy by any means..it's a Kodak Easyshare.
Anyways, I don't have much advice but wanted to tell you your baby is SOOO adorable!
I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I think it's a great digital SLR for a beginner. The color is so much better than on my old digitals. My second choice was the Nikon D40.
I chose the Canon over the Nikon because the Nikon requires more expensive lenses and I felt the Canon reviews fit what I needed more. I was able to get my Canon with the kit lens and an SD card on amazon.com for less than $500.
Thank you!
I have a Kodak Easyshare now that I "practice" with...hehe...I like it a lot and it takes pretty good pictures, I was just looking for something a little fancier
Awesome! I'll look into the Canon and Nikon cameras you suggested...I know Canon makes great cameras too...good to know the lenses are cheaper
Hi! I don't have time for a huge write up right now- but, I use a Nikon D40X (now known as a D60). The D40 is a good one, too- but, check out BHPhoto.com or Adorama.com for the best pricing (and no sales tax .
I'd go with either the D40/60/80 or one of Canon's Rebels, unless you have a store of lenses from a manufacturer that would only fit Sony/Olympus/another less popular brand. Nikon and Canon own the entry level DSLR front- and really, the pro SLR front, too, in the U.S. It's easiest to find lenses and other accessories for the two.
www.dpreview.com is the place to check for REALLY good reviews, once you narrow down your choices a bit. And for the record, Nikon has done a wonderful job of outfitting their D40 line with great inexpensive and GORGEOUS lenses- so, it's not a worry. But, owning a DSLR doesn't stop at the price of the body- you WILL want more lenses (especially if you go with Canon- their kit lens is of pretty suckass quality), flashes, filters, and other accesories- it's a fun hobby, but, not a cheap one.
