Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

Your opinion please

What do you think of the # of views that each post has?  Does it discourage or encourgage you to post, view, etc?  Does it make you more or less hesitant to post?

I was thinking of this today when I noticed some posts have over 100 views but only 10 responses.

Re: Your opinion please

  • I find it very interesting that some get over 100 views but only 10 responses...knowing that there may be a lot more poeple on this bored than we thought....  :)

NICOLE!  I tried emailing you back all afternoon and it kept getting sent back! grrr....  How did your hair turn out????  I just got red added to mine...woot woot!

  • I'm also interested by it.  It helps me gauge how interesting/funny/relevant my posts are, especially if 99 people have viewed it, and no one has responded.  Epic failure.

Sometimes when I see a post has a gazillion replies, I tend not to reply to it.   I'd doubt I'd have anything new to contribute.

Something I'm trying to take into account is how accurate the posts are.  If ten people post a response, and people are following the conversation, those 100 views can pile up very quickly.

It's one of the things I like better than the knot.

  • Honestly I hardly notice it. It might catch my eye if there's a post that has a number WAY off of the others, but thats it.

  • Sometimes I hesitate cause I'm not sure if anyone will read that far down or if I am just typing to hear myself...
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • It's funny you ask that cuz I was just thinking about that today too!  My main thought was "wow" there are a lot more lurkers than posters!  I wish I could post more... but with no internet access at work it makes it difficult... by the time the evening comes and I catch up... I feel like I've missed the boat to reply :)

  • I never really paid attention to the numbers.  I may read a post and it's responses, come back later to read it again, view the new responses and maybe add one if need be.  I also don't click the follow the post thingy and come back often to read a post I created or commented on.

Sooo, what I'm saying is....I may be 50 of the 100 views :)

  • ditto smcjmk09, by the time I am able to get online I feel like that train has already passed for most posts.  I used to be able to check at work from my phone cause we had a lot of downtime, but now that we are really busy, I have to wait until I get home.  Also, if someone has already said the exact thing I was going to say, I don't post.  I hate repetitive responses (unless it's a poll).

  • Yeah, not sure I have a feeling about it either way. Sometimes I click in, read the post and just have nothing valuable to contribute, so I don't say anything. Doesn't mean the post is not interesting, just that I have no advice/opinion/wisdom to impart.

This is very true, I never thought of it like that. However, I always feel stupid when one of my posts has 50 views and no responses. Lol.

  • Yeah...100 views doesn't mean 100 people looked at it.  1 person could have looked at it 100 times.  Or 2 people 50 times each.  We'll never know.

A post that has 100 views and 10 replies could just mean that the 10 people that did reply have come back and looked at it once they see a response posted.  Those would add up rather quickly.

Lurkers are inevitable on an internet forum. I look at a lot of the posts, but I only post when I have something to say about it.

  • Ok, so there have been many times where I have read something and have a great response only to read that someone else has responded with exactly what I was going to say.  That is the only thing I like about yahoo answers.  If someone has already typed it you can put a thumbs up or thumbs down on it......(so you either agree or disagree with their advice).  I think if there was something simple like that then more people would "vote" on better answers.  Most people don't want to type ditto.  NOW on the other hand when you type a ?? and you get 0-1 answers and 100+ views....that is VERY discouraging.
