Hair adviSe needed

My hair is a med/dark brown and I've gotten caramel highlights for about 5 years.

I think I want to go with all one color for a change and have a couple ideas in mind (a lighter brown, something with a red tint).

The last time I had my hair colored was at the end of July.

Should I have my hair professionally colored or do you think it would be ok if I did it myself?  My main concern is I have no clue what the one color will do to my highlights.  I'm afraid I'll still have streaks of some kind and it'll look hideous.

Any input is appreciated.

It's always easier to go darker when you do at home color.  I would just schedule something with a stylist if you can afford it.

Coloring your hair at home is very tricky with highlights.  I'd also go see a stylist if you can.

I probably should make an appointment.  I would hate to have to shave my head.

Definitely get it done professionally if you're not familiar with the color and/or the way it reacts to your hair.

 For colors you could go with several. You're lucky in that you've got a skin tone that works well with many different hair colors. You could go with a caramel brown all the way to an auburn. I'd still get some highlights or lowlights, but that's just me.

My natural color is light brown and I had blonder highlights. My hairdresser daughter moved 4 hours away, and my gray roots were driving me nuts so I bought a brown and tried it myself. She was ready to kill me and had to fix it, the brown part was ok  but the highlighted parts turned a funny reddish color. I will wait on her from now on.

Definitely stay away from home hair color <--- says the girl who had chunks of her hair fall out right before senior prom from using said home hair color.

 I'm always a fan of reddish brown color foiled in with a few blonde pieces.  I need to get mine done again.

I've never had trouble with home color, but my highlights/lowlights are natural, so they color normally (and then you have dimensional color.). For the first time with pro highlights, I'd go back and have a pro do it. After that, you could probably do at-home stuff no problem.
