Hi everyone! Here's the story- I used to live in Chicago, and had my dream job doing event planning and my now husband was working towards his degree in marketing. He proposed, I said yes! Prior to the wedding, I got laid off. We still got married in July 2009, thanks entirely to my parents. But neither of us could find jobs in our fields. We decided we couldn't afford to live in Chicago anymore without jobs, so we researched the best economies and up and moved here to San Antonio! We left our family, friends and everything we knew to try and start over. Unfortunately, we still haven't had any luck here for 3 months now. After the cost of moving, furniture, and the first 3 months of rent, utilities, food and gas we literally have barely anything left. We both graduated with honors and are hard-working, friendly, creative energetic people so I can't understand why we can't get jobs in what is supposed to be one of the best economies right now. If anyone reading this has any job leads in event planning (or any type of coordinating or entry level event sales) or marketing, please please let me know. We even met 2 people who work for USAA but they weren't able to get us anything. We are trying everything and don't have much more time before I don't know what we do. Thanks so much for reading all this and thanks in advance for any suggestions!!
PS. We've already tried employment agencies, online job boards, calling/going in to companies, networking...
Re: Relocated for the job market
I feel your pain more than you know. I've been looking for over a year. I think SA doesn't have any more "good" jobs than other cities; we seem to have more manufacturing jobs than anything else. I graduated with an MBA in Marketing and can't find any marketing jobs that I qualify for either. Good luck to your H.
I interned for an event planning company called Outside the Box Event Productions during my last semester of school. Call them at 481-1200 or go to their website at www dot outside the box events dot com. They're really friendly and may be able to help you out. I have no idea what else to tell you except keep at it, live frugally and good luck!
Hi, I just moved here last year to live with my FI and I went through searching for a job here. What kind of job are you looking for? I think San Antonio has a lot of jobs, but in fewer fields than other metro areas.
Also, right now is a good time to try to get into USAA, they are hiring a lot of people. I would try to contact one of their recruiters directly.
I really don't think SA has the best job market at all. I've heard that DFW has more opportunity.
mysa.com has job listings if you haven't checked there yet. Best wishes!!
thank you everyone!
salbert- I will contact them about event planning, thanks for the info!
rms- I am looking for event planning (or anything related to task oriented/organizational type work) and my husband is looking for entry level marketing. We have been applying to so many jobs at USAA and haven't even been called for an interview. How can we contact a recruiter directly? Tried calling and e-mailing them but everything is automated and we can't reach an actual person. Do you happen to know which employment agencies they work with if any?
pkate- all the research we did showed SA was better than DFW, and since it is cheaper to live here that's why we moved here. We are just shocked at how hard it still is here compared to Chicago.
oct- yes, looked at the new Marriott but only one job was related to either of our industries. I applied to it, called to see about setting up an interview, and they really aren't open to phone calls. So I doubt anything will happen there.
Thanks again everyone and if you hear of ANYTHING, please keep me posted. I appreciate it!
I've gotten a hold of a recruiter there, but they weren't helpful. They pretty much just told me to apply online. If I remember correctly, it's a machine that reads the resumes that are submitted, not actual people the first time around. I can't remember how I found a phone number anymore; I might have just called whatever number I found and asked for HR. Just keep applying!
