Without any details, like the price range you're looking for, I can only assume that price doesn't matter.
Go for the Escort Smart Mirror GPS. It combines the function of your rear-view mirror and the GPS for ease of use and for optimal use of space in your car. It also contains an SD card reader for maps, pictures and e-books. And it's only $800 on Amazon.com!

I realize I may have misunderstood, as you asked us to recommend portable GPS systems, and the one I listed earlier isn't really portable.
Perhaps you're looking for the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS receiver? It's a great device and I really want one.
Or maybe you're looking for something like the Garmin Oregon 400T 3-Inch Touchscreen Handheld GPS Unit. It's got really good reviews on Amazon.
Like I said before, I have no idea what you're looking for, as the only details you gave us are "portable" and "GPS" with no mention of price range, what you'll use it for, or anything.
