12/18 Question

In honor of the winter storm coming:

Do you remember the last time you experienced a major accumulation of snow?  Like a foot or more?  Would you like a foot or more of snow here in SC?

Re: 12/18 Question

  • I'm sure we had a major storm at some point the winter of 2006 (the last winter I was in NY).   I remember being at work and it starting to snow and snow and snow.  Totally freaking out because they were saying it was going to be the worst storm ever.  My 10 minute commute took me over an hour.  Had to work the next day and I was the only assistant that made it in.

Oh funny story: First year my sister moved down here, they had "snow".  Nothing accumulated on the roads, just patches here and there on the grass.  My BIL comes home early from work.  Sister says "Why are you home?"  BIL says "They closed due to the snow".   Sister is like "What?! There's like nothing out there?"  Crazy SC people.  Love how the world stops in a snow storm.  Go up to NY and it's like a normal day. 8 inches of snow?  Puleeze that's nothing.

  • Hmmm the last big storm I remember was in college, I think 2007. It was crazy, but not so much we were snowed in. The last storn where the snow was so high you couldnt open doors was 91 or 92 I think. I loved it!!!

I wouldn't mind it here once if I didnt have to go to work =P

  • As I have been living in the coastal areas of NC and SC for the past years, I can't remember a huge snow recently. However, I do remember around 1988 when I was living in Western NC there was a snow that was really big, like roads, schools, business closed, we had to shovel the driveway and whatnot.  It was great we had a great time playing in it.  I remember about 2-3 times a winter growing up getting decent snow fall when we would put on snow clothes and go sledding and play....I miss that!!

I wish we would get some snow here, but I  also know that doesn't happen much in Charleston.

We are going to NYC for Christmas, so maybe we'll have a white Christmas, it would be my first!

  • The last major snow storm I remember was in 04 back in Mass. We had over 92 inches of snow that winter...but the day I walked out and couldn't see my car because of a 10ft snow drift I knew it wouldn't be long before we got out.

And no I don't want to see snow here...its kinda the reason we moved South. I'll take the heat and humidity any day, at least you don't have to shovel it!

  • I can't remember specifics...but I know I experienced a lot of snow when I lived in Iowa.  My best memory was it snowing about 2 feet and then we had freezing rain on top of it.  We let my dog out to go do her business.  She used to love playing in the snow, so she went running to jump into a snow drift and ended up sliding across the yard.

In SC...I can't remember much...I moved here in 97, and there really hasn't been more than 6 inches.  To my memory, last year was the best snow I experienced.

  • I just moved here from Boston...we had tons of snow last winter. It was a horrible season for us. I am looking forward to the milder winters here!
  • Last time we were "snowed in" with a foot of snow was when we lived in Fairfax, VA.  It was in early 2007.  We sat in our apartment with the gas fireplace on and watched snow for 2 days.  The cable was out.

Last time I had to brave treachorous conditions was in early 2006. DH hadn't moved to Fairfax yet (he was just a boyfriend then,) and I was going to visit him and driving through the mountains in the eastern panhandle of WV in a VW New Beetle.

I got snowed in in the middle of the night in a rest stop and the only other people there were truck drivers.  It looked like the roads weren't going to be cleared until morning, and so they helped me get to cleared roads.  2 trucks drove side-by-side right in front of me and made "tracks" that I followed.  They had metal beams that hung down in back half-way to the ground so that if I lost traction, I would just bump into them and not take off like an out-of-control bowling ball down a lane. I followed them for 60 miles, and eventually we got to roads that were cleared!  That was the worst time on the road in my life.

In college in feb of 2003 we got about 3 feet of snow, and my roommies and I payed the cute boys downstairs in liquor and food to shovel out our cars.  It seriously took them all day.

Biggest snow I remember is when I was a kid, there were 8 foot snowdrifts in front of my house and I got stuck in one and it took my dad and 2 neighbors and a lot of shovels to get me out!

I hope we never get a foot of snow in SC.  I have seen how this place shuts down with 3 inches of snow.  A foot would shut this place down for a month I'll bet!

Hey were you there when they had the big snow storm in October and a bunch of trees fell down because they still had their leaves, so they were holding a bunch more snow and they couldn't hold the weight?

I think that may have been in 2005 but I'm not sure.

Wow so you braved all that to visit Z?  Now that's love.   We had a storm once and I called DH (boyfriend at the time) and said "Um yeah I'm not coming over see ya when I see ya!"  Oh and I didn't want him driving in the bad weather either.
